Stereo shuts off when engine revs high

My stereo has been turning off randomly - I thought when I hit bumps or hit bumps while on the gas... but I started to notice it was often when I shift.

When I shift, I rev the engine for the next gear - old habit - don't judge if you agree/disagree on how I drive my stick.

That said, I still wasn't sure what was causing it, and was convinced it was the wiring - so, I've tested the wiring, I've by hand hit all of the wires while the stereo is on as if I was hitting bumps in the road and then some. NOTHING - stereo works fine.

So, last thing, I jump in the cab while parked, and start revving the engine, poof.... stereo shuts off and then turns back on.

So - what do I do? Is the alternator bad? Or? what to look at/into?

Do the lights brighten or dim when reving, might test at night. What I'm wondering is if the radio is stock or aftermarket and could it be shutting down when presented with higher voltage as a built in safety thing. Like if the charging system is hitting well above 14 or 15 volts.

Aftermarket stereo.

I haven't noticed the lights dimming, but I'll go test this in two hours and report back

Have someone rev the engine while you test voltage at the battery.

Sounds like a loose wire.

So, at idle the lights kinda flicker (not "flicker" but ever so slight pulsing) a tiny bit, get very slightly brighter when reving, but not as much as my old 72 vw bug used to (that thing would like double the lights!)

Tested battery voltage, around 14 at idle, jumped up to just above 15 volts when reving

Would that jump to 15 volts do it? What do I add into the system to take care of that?

finally got to it tonight with my wife (life with kids is insane)

I thought this originally as well, but all of the wires are super solid, triple checked, even pulled off the key'd wire and put it on a dedicated switch and still the same problem.

TOO HIGH! Replace that old voltage regulator, it's mechanical if original. Get one for a mid '80s truck, it's gonna be electronic and will do the job. Over 15 volts is why your radio is shutting down.
Here is one for example, for 1965 up through 1989 at least. More Information for STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS VR166

K, got the voltage regulator and installing today.

This capacitor looks like it's seen a long life.... leave it be?? Or, is it screaming to be replaced?

It's long past it's use by date, good luck finding new one.

Ok... replaced the regulator and initial tests seem to show it's fixed

Max at 14.5 volts and held solid there.

Radio stayed on for lots of revving...

Your truck's battery and lights will thank you too.

The capacitor thing... does it matter? does it "need" to be replaced? everything seems to be working - don't fix what's not broken? replace before it becomes a problem?

Can't find a direct replacement, but searching around, this popped up and looks fairly promising:

Read up on what noise suppression capacitors do.
Your aftermarket radio may/may not even need one.

Wouldn't worry about the cap unless you get ignition or alternator noise through the radio / amplifiers.

When I had just bought a 67 galaxie, it was putting out almost 16V on the 390. I didn't notice any other problems. A new regulator fixed that problem.
