80-90 or something in that range as long as it's hypoid oil.

X2 80/90 gear oil. Once you replace that leaking gasket....with a Lube Locker one. https://www.wildhorses4x4.com/lubelo...MaAt3LEALw_wcB

Fill it until your pinky tip touches it thru the fill hole. What is the axle code # on the (dvrs side door end edge) warranty plate tag?

That tag on the front axle is the ratio info on your front axle. Looks like you have 4.09 ratio. I believe the Dana BOM number is on the tag" 610010 4R

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...axle-tags.html

https://differentials.com/technical-...dentification/

Wipe off that 44 just to the left of the tag, does it say 44 6F?

Well having "a gasket" and having "a Lube Locker gasket" is like the difference in a Ford 1972 Courier and a 2024 F350 Super Duty Crew Cab Long bed...diesel. Lol

Yes get that axle # off that tag.

Actually the door tag won’t help, truck is an f100 sitting on a 3/4 ton highboy chassis. I haven’t heard about a lube locker gasket unless it’s the one that comes with the sealant on it already.

So you did not xfer the metal tag from the door of the chassis doner truck? Any way that is a different discussion...a Lube Locker gasket does not need any sealant. Thru its design it does not need any wet/liquid sealant applied before installation on the gasket, the cover or the differential.

I went with 75W-90 full synthetic in the front & rear diffs, transfer case and the 4-speed transmission.
If there's a limited slip in there you will need a friction modifier.
It did make the 4-speed shift smoother too.

Looks like a (New Process) NP-203 and it takes 30wt oil, it needs thinner oil because it "splash" lubes the internals. So NO 80/90 gear lube. Look at the front of the xfer case for a ID tag to 100% ID it. 205 stamp.

And a for sure 203 stamp.

NP-205 on the left and NP-203 on right.

203 left, 205 right.

What oil talk: "The owner's manual recommendation is to use SAE 30 non-detergent motor oil. Is there something that would be better from the perspective of protecting gears than a motor oil?

For those not familiar with the NP 203: It is an all wheel drive transfer case for full size pickup trucks. The transfer case has a two speed gearbox at the front much like a non-synchro manual transmission rather than the planetary set found in most transfer cases. It has a differential behind the range box and a chain to the front output.

The lubrication for the range box is just like a manual transmission. The lay-shaft sits about 1/2 submerged and carried oil lubricates the main shaft bearings and gears. The differential is lubricated by oil carried by the chain using an oil catch. The rear output bearings are then lubricated by splash captured off the differential.

I've read warnings on the internet to not use gear oil because the rear output bearings don't get oil from the multiple relay of oil up from the sump. So it would seem that a lighter oil would be necessary. But I question the long term life when lubricated with a motor oil vs. an oil package designed for gears, roller bearings and ball bearings."

https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/th...%20motor%20oil.

What weight oil for 203 transfer case https://www.ford-trucks.com › forums › 1556755-what-...

Sep 27, 2018 — The NP203 uses 10w-40 motor oil. People severely hurt their 203s by using either gear oil (90w) or transmission fluid (18w) in their cases.

What are these

I serviced the front diff. Couple day days later I noticed oil leak. I cleaned it off good n let it set. It’s not coming from the gasket but it is from these two spots. Can u tell me what these are n how would I stop the leakage.

Those are plug welds the factory uses to hold the axle tubes in the differential housing. I believe the tubes are a press fit into the housing, then they additionally plug weld these spots. I think you can clean up this area really really well and reweld them, but be aware of fire potential with oil in the area.

You won't burn through. The tubes should be 3/16" maybe even 1/4", keep the heat within reason and you'll be fine.

I'd be interested to know why they are leaking though... is your housing bent?
