Oh no. Spare nut!

Whelp, I have a spare 13mm (wrench size) black cap nut. Only parts I remember pulling that sizer were the brackets for the glow plug relay on the pass side and the wiring harness box on the dr side. Both have all their hardware. I did find some spare bits in the mess in the valley but I thought I set all of those aside?

13mm black cap nut is the one for the plastic engine cover that mounts over the HPOP reservoir.

Well it depends. Valve cover have bolts if I recall, the engine cover uses a cap nut. depends on the terminology of the OP.
I just had my cover off yesterday, I'm 100% sure it was 13mm.

Some of the valve cover bolts have studs protruding from the top of the bolts. The nuts that go in there are flange nuts, not acorn nuts. Acorn nuts to my knowledge only are used on the “alien” cover over the fuel/water separator bowl.

In my experience, it is VERY common to have parts and/or fasteners "left over". Put that thing in a baggie and label it. You will find its "home" one day...

I'm kidding... Well, part of that was a joke anyway. Maybe post a picture of the fastener you found wandering aimlessly.

There are no studs on the fasteners that hold down the valve covers. Some of the bolts have threads sticking up so you can attach the brackets that hold the heater hoses in place, etc. No studs. At least on my truck that is how it is arranged.

Re-read my post please. It implies exactly what you just described with different wording. I never said that there were just “studs” holding down the valve covers . I’m using Cat terminology based on my experience rebuilding their engines. Have a very nice day, but please practice better comprehension. 🤪

I put it in the glove box. I'll be doing the injector/gp/vc service in the near future anyway. I'll just keep my eyes open. Just wierd as, the only things I pulled with those nuts were the 2 brackets and they're all set.

Once lost a valve cover bolt... searched everywhere... even took the cover back off, to try to see if dropped into head. A few months later was changing my fuel filter... looked down... the VC bolt was laying there by the EBP sensor... Geeezzz

I'd much rather have extra parts... than to be short a bolt and not know where it was.

so I read the first paragraph and my brain almost exploded and I was ready to hit the quote button and light you up with a flame thrower. Then kindly warn you to never be a helicopter mechanic.
then I paused, finished reading (that's my age showing) and then had a laugh.

Good to hear you had a laugh sir.

Age showing is something we all have to deal with and beats the alternative. Be safe out there!
