It’s a restored engine. I think it’s the original but not 100% sure. I doubt it has adjustable lifters. That being the case if I can find someone to work on it what am I ballpark looking at for cost?
Before you go too far down the road to repairs, how many miles since the rebuild? How often do you drive it? It could just be a sticky valve. Tray adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas and oil. Can you make a video of the noise? Does the noise change as the engine heats up? You might do a compression test to see if it's a valve sticking open.
Most engines rebuilt in the last 40 years are likely to have adjustable lifters, and one or two may have just lost their adjustment. That can be fixed by pulling the intake manifold.
If it has stock lifters, you have to pull the head and intake manifold. Clearance with the stock lifters is set by grinding the valve or valve seat (to decrease), or grinding the valve stem to increase. The usual solution for an engine only needing one or two clearances fixed is to put adjustable lifters at those valves. No machining needed, and pretty cheap. If you are paying someone to do it, it's likely a $750 job going that way.
First of all thank you so much for all this info. There’s only less than 100 miles since rebuild. I barely drive it at all. Maybe 15 miles per year since I’ve owned it for 3 years. It sits in my garage. The noise doesn’t change as it heats up. It’s a steady annoying tapping sounds no matter how long engine runs. Trying not to run too long for fear of doing anymore damage. I will have my daughter help me take a video with sound of it and forward to you. I’ll try Marvel Mystery oil first. Getting it ready for winter. I’m in CT so it gets cold here!
