Question Trying to find correct hyd lifter for 74 390 4bbl and length of stock pushrods

1974 F250 390 4bbl with non-adjustable rockers.

1. Tried Checker and Autozone for a new lifter. Both places had new lifters in stock, but they were at least a 1/4 to short. Guy at Autozone took my old lifter and compared it to lifters on shelf. Came back with a lifter for a 302 that has same dimensions as my FE Lifter except the pushrod cup on the 302 lifter is closer to the top of the lifter (with both lifters sitting upright on the counter) than the pushrod cup is on the FE lifter. Do I have to go to Ford to get the right (read made specificially for an FE Engine) lifter? I don't have any desire to run a 302 lifter in an FE Engine. It's just not right to run 302 parts in my FE, especially since I will be moving 1000 miles from my present location soon and I don't want any valve train problems while towing my ski boat that far.

2. I know I found it once, but now I can not find the thread where the length of the stock pushrods were given. Can some one please tell me what the stock length of the pushrods is. I need to replace 12 of my pushrods with .060 longer pushrods to bring the valve train back within spec's so hopefully I don't bend any more pushrods.

Thanks!

Well 302 hyd lifters will work in a FE so it's possible your old set was a mis marked set. Or just a set of lifters from a company that might no longer sell that style of lifter. I've heard of this happening from a few companies. Since your going to tow and travel a good distance why not get a new set of complete lifters and pushrods and be done with it? I would rather have peace of mind on that kind of trip.

I want to replace all of the lifters and pushrods that's why I am trying to find out what is in the engine now, as far as what length pushrods are in there now. I have no reason to believe that anything other than stock Ford FE Lifters are in the engine now.

I am the 2nd owner of this truck. It only has 78,000 original miles. 1st owner kept nice records. Engine was rebuilt by the Ford dealer he purchased the truck from after tne oil pump failed when truck had around 30,000 miles on it. After the rebuild he hadn't done anything else (other than routine maintenance) to the engine. I doubt that there is anything other than stock ford lifters in the engine now, FE Lifters, NOT 302 LIFTERS! I know that the Ford Dealership that I worked at for a while wouldn't use anything but stock Ford parts. Yes, I know that some ford dealers would have done things differently, but I chose to believe that this dealer did the right thing and used FE Lifters.

I don't have a 12" dial caliper, so I can not check the length of the pushrods that are in there now. I think they are the stock length. If they are stock length, then the lifters should also be an FE stock item.

This truck is a cherry unit I found in AZ. Check it out at http://www.66f100.com/1974f250.htm. I am **** about my trucks. I want it fixed right, not fixed with something the will work. I guess I will take one of the lifters and one of the pushrods to a Ford Dealer tomorrow and get the right parts for my FE Engine. To me, putting 302 Lifters in an FE Engine is the same as putting a Chevy Engine in a Ford Truck, they both work, BUT ITS JUST WRONG!. My opionion and I really don't care what any body thinks about my opionion.
