I recently bought an 86 E350 5.8L 351 (no in tank fuel pumps) Honey Motorhome to restore. And here's the problem. When I bought it, I knew it needed a new rear tank. I got the tank and a NOS sender and put them on. The selector valve wasn't switching to the rear tank so I put on a new one. It was working fine except my fuel gauge was reading empty on the rear tank. I read that it could be a problem with the gauge and if you short out the sender wire to the frame it should peg the gauge- it didn't. After doing that now I'm not getting fuel to the engine from either tank. What have I done? I'm thinking that I may have fried something in the new selector valve It's not a blown fuse because that's the first thing I checked. I've never had a dual tank truck before so I think I'm in over my head!
The selector valves were a problem for years and even back then
Find a 86 PCED and read through the selector valve function, diagnosis and repair
In the PCED and online there is a ton of info at AllData
Those old style 6 port selector valves with the electrical connector and the solenoid, just let fuel through and switch the sender wiring
Maybe you have a no-good new part
You can hear that solenoid operate and click when you move the tank selector switch inside the truck?
Thanks for the info. I suspected that I fried the new selector valve so I put the old one back on. At least now I have the front tank functioning and it's running again. I've already ordered another new valve so as soon as it arrives I'll install it. This time I'll know better than not to short anything out. I still don't know for sure why the rear tank isn't reading on the fuel gauge but I suspect that either the float is stuck or the NOS sender is bad. I hate to drop the tank again but I might have to. I was lucky to find the sender at all. My wife found this one on eBay and we couldn't find one anywhere else. If you know where I can get one please let me know. Once again thanks.
