Serpentine belt replacement

I'm coming up to 100k in the next few months and I've been doing all the maintenance myself over the past year. I've done both diffs, t-case, trans, fuel filters, cabin filter, fixed a few body issues, cleaned and greased some wiring connections, new front end links and joints, etc. I was going to change the coolant but the diesel shop here told me to leave it alone since it's a very long life coolant. So now I'm on to the serpentine belt. Do you guys proactively change your belts at 100k? Or do you go longer?

I'll be replacing mine in another 10K miles when it's time to change fuel filters (at ~85K). I like Gates and Dayco belts, but will have to research the correct part numbers for single alternator configuration.

For something that's critical to operation, and to prevent it breaking when out in the middle of nowhere, I'm a firm believer in preventative measures...

Yes, I usually change mine out as part of my 100,000 mile maintenance.
I had the dealer do it ( coolant change, tranny and belt) and the tech had a heck of time getting that belt around dual alternators. Service had called and said my truck was almost done and I could head over to pick it up. When I arrived they were still trying to get the belt on, and it took him two hours, while I waited in the service bay. Made me a little nervous about ever trying that at home, If the service tech has that much problem. I suspect, luck of the draw, I got a tech that had never done it before and was struggling with the tricks of the trade to get it around all those pullies with out a twist.

It is tight in there for big hands, that serpentine belt goes many directions and I can see how it would be a challenge

I change mine at ~150,000 miles. Coming up on 300,000 miles so probably need to plan on changing it.

Do the tensioner and idler at the same time. Gates does a set with everything in it.

I've got 170,000+ miles on the '21' belt looks good still. If it looks cracked then I'll change them. I've never changed a belt before 250k miles on my trucks.

I meant do mine this summer and did not... at just under 130k miles. Going to keep an eye out on the belt, maybe, after reading these comments, and change out next spring. I did buy the Gates kit with two new pullies and a new tensioner.

If the kit is handy, could you post the part number? TIA

Where'd you purchase it, btw?

Just logged into my rockauto.com account. This link should work... the kit is from Gates. I also bought two sealed bearings for replacement on the OEM pullies I have, which I'll use for next time. I did a thread on the bearings. I'll dig into the old tensioner and see if I "restore" it or if I have to replace it for the next 150k miles.

Well, just my luck. Your kit indicates that it doesn't cover 2020 MY. The only Gates kits (or any other brand for that matter) that I can locate are for 2019 and earlier. WTH? No love for us 2020+ owners?

I'd have to buy all the components separately, which equals $$$. Grrr.... thanks a ton, Gates!

In all my trucks only 1 idler pulley needing changing and that was on a 95 F250 with the 351 in it at 250k miles. It was probably the western NY winters/ salt that did it in.

My idler pulley bearings were shot at just under 200k miles, don’t know if that’s normal or not.
