I'm nearing the 100k mark on my truck and was thinking this would be good time to put a belt kit on it before it becomes a problem at the most inconvenient time. Thanks @Overkill2 for the link to the kit for the early model years.

There is no mention of loc-tite in the service manual but it should be obvious if the old bolts come out with loc-tite on them.

So just an update....

I'm currently 2 hours into the job. I have managed to get the old belt off. Now I will begin trying to replace the tensioner and both idler pulleys and then try to get the new belt routed.

This job is a P I T A. There is just not much room for hands with the fan shroud installed, and I'm having to use a work platform despite being 6'3" tall because of how high the truck sits with the 1.5" level and 35" tires. My breaker bar wouldn't work to release belt tension because it's a 1/2" drive, so I had to put a 3/8" adapter on it to fit the tensioner provision and that made the entire apparatus too wide. It would hit the fan assembly. So, I had to use a regular 3/8" ratchet with a large closed-end wrench slid over the handle for leverage. Then the electrical connector for the fan clutch was a P I T A to remove. Ended up having to use small picks and go up in the bottom of the harness connector to release the tab so it would slide off, but then Ford had it tethered to the bracket with tape and a Christmas tree clip, which was almost impossible to remove due to clearance issues. UGH....

This is a textbook example of a job that would take 15 minutes with great access, but actually ends up taking hours due to the fact that there is no access.

I'm taking a break and then I'll go after it again this afternoon and try to finish it before dark. Got a big storm coming in tomorrow.

Finally got it done. Thanks to everybody who chimed in, especially @Dirthawg2.0 for those torque specs. Probably won't ever do that job again Total PITA. But I'm glad it's done now. No more horrible noises on cold winter mornings. At 14:28 in the video I noticed something interesting about the tensioner. It appears to me that the Gates brand and Motorcraft brand are the same part.

Decided to have my serpentine belt replaced with a Ford Motorcraft belt at the Ford shop and they charged me 1 hour of labor. Thought this was well worth it.

Yes I'd pay 1 hour of labor for this job anytime. Granted I did the tensioner and both idler pulleys too.

Your welcome and thank you for the feedback of the installation process. I was thinking this was something I would be willing to tackle on my own but after hearing about the issues you had I think I will just pay a diesel mechanic to do the work for me.

Good news that Gates is the same as Motorcraft as I had a Gates put in while the entire airco was getting replaced.

On my 2011 truck back when I had it. I hit 108,000 miles and was in the shop for Tranny and coolant flush, So I had them change the belt while it was in the shop..
I called to check around 2pm and they said tranny and coolant were done just starting belt and truck should be ready for pick up around 4pm.
So at 4 pm I showed up and they were still trying to get belt on. I sat around for an hour and they got a second more experienced tech involved and finally around 5:30 they got it.

I decided right then and there, I wasn't f doing any future belts.

Damn, now y'all have spooked me. I've got all the parts, but now I'm thinking I'm just gonna take them to a shop and have them wrangle with the job, LOL

The old days of the 1/2" breaker bar on the pully release the tension on the belt ... take off and feed the new belt on 15-20 minutes.

On my '92 Chevy with a 350 I could change the belt and drink two beers in 15-20 minutes.

Problem was it couldn't go 50k miles without needing a new idler pulling.
