I have a 1990 F-150 XLT Lariat. Single cab short bed 2WD. It is equipped with a 5.0L and an E4OD transmission. The truck runs and drives great. 1-2 shift is semi hard and 2-3 is smooth but drops 200-300 RMPs after shift. Then a second later drops more RPMs like the torque converter is trying to lock. It will run out fine but will never engage the torque converter to lock up. Cruising at 45 MPH if you let off the throttle it feels like engine braking. I've tested the Solenoid pack and every thing Ohms perfect and all solenoids open and close when 12v is applied. I've cleaned the plugs in the harness to the transmission and it has a new MLPS. I have two codes and its 99. Idle not learned/Electric Pressure Control (EPC) Circuit Fault. And 65 Transmission Control Switch (TCS) DID not change. Even though i pressed the OD off button during test. My OD off Light on the dash is on as soon as i start the truck and will not go off no matter how many times i press it. Again it wont go into OD at all. Any info to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

The EPC fault sounds like why, the transmission cant confidently control line pressure.
Can you recap how you are getting code 99?
it seems the only reason you shouldnt have 99 is because 1990 5.0 shouldnt have a e4od. Confirm you have a "E" on your trans sticker on the door?
otherwsie, just using the 5.8l diag should work if you are truly getting a 99
Why not? That was the electronic automatic overdrive in 1990.
the source I used for charts seemed to not “include” it but like I said it’s probably just something you follow the 5.8 “diagnostic path” since it’s similar enough for this purpose
I don’t have a break out box to test these with. I’m hoping to get pointed in the right direction on how to diagnose the problem. I’m stumped.
The breakout box is for making testing easier, you can test the cavities of the connector the same way just with more elbow grease. Do you have backprobing kit or experience doing that to a large connector, do you know how to find the cavity?
