Get front wheels off the ground, fill reservoir to the brim, and with the engine off key on first click to unlock steering wheel, turn wheel lock to lock ten times.

Top off reservoir as needed, then with engine on turn lock to lock another ten times, just don’t hold it at a full turn for more than a couple seconds. After that you should be good, just monitor fluid level after driving.

I have had like three bad aftermarket pumps in a row, and the fourth one I put in just randomly started making noise if I go above 3k rpm. Ford no longer carries pumps or steering gears for these trucks which is pretty disappointing as aftermarket quality is hit or miss.

I’ve followed the vacuum bleeding procedure in the service manual, but I don’t like it because the supply hose is above the return hose inside the reservoir, and you end up pulling more vacuum on the supply which makes the pump work harder and get noisy.

I guess I didn’t need to say get front wheels off the ground, being that the truck is pictured on a hoist haha. Nice truck, I’d love to have a hoist. Especially for power steering work

Thanks!

Great info! I just picked up the truck last week. Its a 2V 4.6 with 120k miles. As far as the lift goes, I gave myself a present this past march. Its such a pleasure. I built the building 2 years back with the intention of getting a lift. Its a 24' x 30' with 10' walls. Wish I did it sooner! Thanks for your help on bleeding the system! Ray

Also

I also need to ask, when you removed your power steering pump, did you need to remove the pulley first in order to get it out? I picked up a complete pump with the pulley already installed. Thanks again!

No it’s just a tight fit. Use a ratchet wrench if you have one. You’ll have to wiggle the bottom bolt out past the steering shaft ujoint, and wiggle the back top bolt out along the frame.

Unless you have a new Edelman line with the nut separate from the high pressure hose, you’ll want to connect the hose to the pump on the bench, 18mm iirc
