beginner brake question

I just bought my 82 f150, and am having brake problems. I am a smart guy, but inexperienced in mechanics. This site is great for guys like me.

My problem is this:

When the truck is cold, the brakes are very weak. As it warms up, they operate fairly well. I checked the fluid, and the rear reservoir is full, but the front is empty. I haven't checked the fluids when warm. The guy that I bought the truck from said that he replaced the master cylinder last year.

What could be the cause and fix for this problem?

Any help and patience with a newbie is greatly appreciated.

I would start by checking for leaks since the front of your resvoir is low Dave

the front is for the brakes brakes i believe anyway. I never heard about temp influencing the brakes much.

i believe that the front resivoir is for the back brakes. check behind the rear wheels around the bleeder valve to find any wet spots. it is most likely a wheel cylinder leak.

Thanks, guys. I will fill the reservoir and look for leaks. I had the drums off yesterday and didn't notice any, but the truck has sat for a long time. I think that I will clean and lube everything as well, just for @#$%'s and giggles. It's still odd that they work better when warm. Oh well, if it ain't broke, break it!

sounds like you need to adjust your brakes. the rear shoes will heat and expand incresing pedal feel. have seen this with the 10" brakes on ford trucks since the late 60's... Kurt

Bingo! I read up a little and found out that either A) engaging the parking brake, or B) repeated braking in reverse will cause the auto adjusters to adjust the brakes (look up beginner in the dictionary and you will see my picture). I did both, and the brakes are fine now. I took off the drums, and everything is pretty dirty, so I think that I will clean and lube everything. I bought a service manual, and it doesn't look too hard. I just need to find the leak as well. I guess that my adventure with the $800 truck starts with the brakes...

Ha ha, that's what I paid for my '80 F-150, and the first thing I'm gonna do is new brakes all the way around and new wheel bearings. Then comes the shocks. Hooray. All I need now is a garage to do all this in. It should be here soon, the gf and I are going to look at two houses that we really like on sat.

I would kill for a garage. I think after the basics on the truck, I will focus my attention on a shop.
