I have a 2005 F250 Superduty with 175k miles. Mostly stock, except for EGR delete. I just had new heads, head gaskets and ARP studs installed. Coolant system flushed. New T-Stat. New oil cooler.
When towing about 7k pounds in 75 degree ambient temps, when I go up hills, my coolant temp climbs to 220+ and EOT is about 12-14 degrees higher than that. The temps would keep climbing, but I have the blue wire mod to switch on the fan manually. When the fan kicks on, ECT drops fairly quickly to 210 or so.
I'm trying to figure out why it's getting hot, and I'm thinking clogged radiator, bad water pump, or bad fan clutch. Any suggestions on how to single out which of those components I should replace first? Thanks.
Switch your fan on at max. 210°F EOT. ECT and EOT should drop, or at least not rise any further under heavy load.
This is the case with my 06 truck.
If the temps continue to rise, something is wrong with your cooling system.
Do you monitor your EGT?
I do monitor EGTs. They're usually around 1000 when the ECT climbs over 210. I do turn on my fan at 210, but it seems like I shouldn't have to, especially in 75 degree ambient Temps and only pulling 7k up moderate grade. I just bought some tunes from Blessed performance, so I'm hoping that will command the fan to turn on sooner automatically.
So the fan isn't coming on at all automatically? It will start engaging around 208F ECT (you can barely hear it) and it will build to full speed around 220F. Full speed is what you get with the blue wire mod.
I know EGR valve unplugged can cause issues with the fan not engaging. One of those strange 6.0 mysteries. I've seen guys run a dummy EGR valve mounted outside the intake to accommodate this.
