94 460 timing cover

Hey guys, I have a quick question for you all I bought a new timing chain cover for my 1994 F250 with a 460 in it. My old cover the gasket was terribly corroded and many imperfections in the face so it was leaking coolant. I bought the cover from Summit racing on the bottom of the cover, there are three holes that go into the oil pan. One of the holes has a bigger diameter in the cover than it does in my old cover so my bolt will not fit.

The new cover appears to have 2, 1/4” holes and one that is 5/16. What is the solution of this? Am I supposed to put a Heli coil in to step it down to a quarter?

There is also an extra flange on this new timing cover, but it comes with a cap for that so I’m not too worried.

If someone would be able to chime in on this issue, that would be great.

Also, what type of RTV am I supposed to use to make these gaskets or put over the gaskets?.

any help on this would be great. This is my first time doing a project like this.

The bolts closest to the rubber seal - both front and back of the motor - are 5/16. the rest of the pan bolts are 1/4". This goes for ALL 429/460s

That other 'flange' is where the mechanical fuel pump would be on a non-EFI motor. Use the provided block-off plate and gasket.

RTV in the corners where the rubber end seal meets the cork pan gasket. Fel-Pro makes a 'timing change gasket set' that includes the crank seal, the rubber oil pan end seal, and two small pieces of the cork pan rail gasket. You'll also need a dab of RTV on the new small piece of pan gasket where it meets the rest of the pan gasket https://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEL-TCS45881

Thanks for the reply. This brings some confusion though. The bolts that came out, and the holes on the stock timing cover are 1/4-20, even the ones by the front seal.

The new timing cover has 5/16” holes in the cover by the seal.

I see most aftermarket covers come with a stud that steps down from 5/16-18 (for in the cover) to 1/4-20 (pan side) with a nylock nut that then adapts to a later style timing cover.

I’d rather not drill the hole bigger in my oil pan, so I guess my options are to either source those studs (which we’re not included) or see if I can find a heli coil type adapter that could insert into the 5/16 hole to adapt down to 5/16.

That's strange. I just the timing cover on my 94 460 last summer, 5/16" bolts on all four coners. I've never seen a 460 or 429 that didn't have that.I would drill the oil pan.

I was < shudder, shake, tremble > W-.. W...WRONG! I just checked my '95s original old timing cover, and you were correct - the inner bolts nearest the pan end seal were 1/4-20. The new replacement (in my case - CA-emissions) cover had 5/16 bolt holes. I must have just grabbed the 5/16 bolts out of my bolt stash without thinking. I crawled under the truck to check the pan bolts at the rear and they were also 1/4-20. That'll teach me to ASSume that Ford didn't change things up over the years.

Apology is due here too! I just went out and crawled under mine and all the bolts are 1/4". I think I was thinking of big block Chevys. Again, I am so sorry.

Ford USED to use the 5/16 bolts at the ends of 460s until ~1989.
