fuel filter light

first of all, i love this site! now for the problem, 1988 f250 7.3. it will sit and idle all day long, but when you start driving and maintain 3000 rpm or so the fuel filter light will glo and then start running rough. if i let off and slow down it will pick back up and run, but i cant go more than about 40mph or the light will come back on. it feels if it is starving for fuel. the filter has been changed. any help would be appriciated, thanks john

dave, i just went out and drained the water seperator. took a test drive and still the same problem. when you drain the seperator does water and fuel come out every time or just when water is present? sorry if the questions seems so lame but i am very new to diesel engines. i have driven big trucks all my life but maintanence was never part of the program thanks to penske truck leasing, thanks john

My next thought would be the transfer pump is getting weak, able to supply enough to idle....not enough to run wide open
