1994 Powerstroke Radiator
Hi all,
Let me start with:
VIN: 1FTHX26F9RKB62054
Engine: Navistar A215
Manaul trans with ZF 5-speed
I am pulling the engine to replace a cracked oil pan (back side from bell housing cover interference). While out I'm considering replacing the radiator with a lighter aluminum. No, there is no problem with the radiator as-is. My issue is this: My radiator has the upper inlet and lower outlet both on the -same- side, the Passenger side. All radiators I've been able to find have inlet and outlet on opposite corners. I feel like I have a frankenradiator.
On the engine:
My upper engine coolant outlet is on the driver's side below the AC compressor with the long tube tilting towards the passenger side. (sorry, need more photos).
The lower engine coolant inlet is on the -passenger- side of the engine pointing at the passenger front side wheel.
My shop manual shows the lower engine inlet on the driver's side, so I'm confused.
Does this look like a stock radiator?
Does someone make this same radiator in aluminum?
If I put a newer aluminum radiator in with inlet/outlets on opposite corners, is there a way to route radiator hoses.
Should I replace the water pump so I get the engine inlet on the driver's side?
For now, I'm back out to the shop to keep pulling the engine. Due to the manual trans and my low-lift engine hoist, it's been a bit of a bigger PITA than I originally figured on. Btu it's all good.

Edit----Just looked at radiators for a 92 IDI. They all had the upper tank hose inlet on the passenger side, and the lower tank outlet on the drivers side. You must have an oddball.
Is anyone familiar with that style water pump?
From other photos I've seen, it looks like my best best is a radiator having the inlet on the top driver's side, and outlet on the bottom passenger side. There appears to be an upper radiator hose that accommodates that by coming off the top of the thermostat tube (not seen here) and then makes a turn back to the driver side. The engine finally came completely out today. What a job that was. I probably spent nearly 40 hours on that all said and done. Now to start in on the parts list.

With that, and knowing I can source an upper hose to connect to a radiator inlet on the driver's side, I think I'm set. Question at this point is....
Who's aluminum radiator is the -best- to source?
Thank you,
Asa Jay

And there is nothing wrong with the one I have, except maybe it looks terrible.

So being "observant" can be an asset here.
In short, at some point in its life, an owner swapped in the International water pump with integrated filter. This move the water pump inlet from the driver side to the passenger side. Now, here is the important part...
- The owner also had the radiator -modified- to move the bottom outlet from the driver side to the passenger side
- This became evident when I inspected the radiator closer and could see where they patched the old outlet location and welded (soldered) on the outlet to the new location
- Also on inspecting the fan shroud, I found the molded in semi-circle at the bottom for clearance of the original driver-side outlet; while the passenger side had a crude (more square) cutout.
Mystery solved. But... finding a proper radiator hose became a problem, because nothing "stock" would work. And... although every number on the radiator hose was still clearly visible, Google could not find it, nor could my parts counter guys. Finally, we broke out "the book" where we could go to the section of hoses with 2" on one end and 2-1/4" on the other with the correct general shape and length. So we ordered one of those and one of those accordian/flexible types.
Turns out Gates 20848 appears to be the correct hose nearly matching what I took off. I'm pretty certain they are the same.
If I ever do decide to get a new radiator, I'll probably get the one that will keep the outlet on the lower passenger side, since hoses are readily available for having the inlet on the upper driver side. I'll also have to source a different radiator shroud at that point. Oh well.

Problem solved.
