Where do you see a vent in the cap as I have not seen any on mine?
If he is going to replace the cap with brass as a test I would drill a hole in the top of the cap to vent and see if that helps?

The caps, i believe, since the duraspark 2 days where they originally went "large cap" have had a vent, the black button, its a pretty simple "air filter" in that it limits the overall amount of air through it, and its just does it by changing the direction of air , kinda like an old oil bath air filter.
This whole thing has me floored ... Who knew that a simple question like this would generate so much forum activity/participation?
Back in the pre- electronic ignition days, my Old Man would question me why I bought expensive ignition points from NAPA (Echlin) instead of cheap discount store points like he did. I simply said let's compare in six months - his were pitted and/or had a 'pimple' on the contacts, where mine still looked like new due to superior materials used (I believe the Echlin contacts were nickle-plated brass and not plain steel 'Chinesium' like his)... My timing/dwell was still spot-on, his car barely ran... Of course, the Old Man also bought used tires for his cars... The ultimate Cheapskate!

There are some things I just will not skimp on!
Used tires can be okay,, but if you were gettng used id want a set of 4 from a vehicle with good alignment, unless i had 2wd then Id demand at least the 2 be the same and not worn badly.. and id only ever do it for a expensive tire set, not gonna buy a used falken when i could get the 10 ply 235/75/15 for 180 USD each, and only buy 2
I used a Blue Streak by Standard cap. Looks the same as my old cap as both have brass contacts, Truck started right up without extra crank time. Easiest repair
I've done in a long time.

I believe my 4.9 I have the same cap, no complaints, and no wear issues

I know of the "black cap" you talk of but I dont remember it on the Standard cap I put on my 300.
I also dont remember on on my 02 Dodge 360 I just did the tune up on.
Only caps I remember the cap on were on Japan cars.

This was back in the late '70s/early '80s, and he'd buy the used Uniroyal PR6 that came from the factory on most GMs, and those were known for slipped plies... OR he'd buy the cheapest new tires he could find - Firestone Deluxe Champion Sup-R-Belt Bias-ply skinnies and put them on his rusty 73 Olds 98... As long as they held air, he didn't care!
My clients ask about used cars. I tell them to look at the tires. If the tires are a good name brand [Michelin, etc] then the car was maintained properly. Cheap people buy round and black tires. People that do it right, spend the extra money and buy tires that are reliable.

Best I can tell, these were the 2nd or 3rd set of tires this car got, the full size spare isnt the original (i doubt the car would come with a white wall tire, plus its year comes out to 1980 on the DOT number and not a 76 or 77), were these good tires new? I am only 26 so curious lol
