Here is a question for the guys that know a lot more than me. They say that the '99 V10 was "performance upgraded" for 2000/2001, and those motors will not fit a '99 because that darn computer is different also. Now, can you change the motor and computer to make a '99 have the same stock capabilities as the 2000 and newer models? The only reason that I'm asking is because mine has 194,000 on it and is starting to show signs of being used up. I have added the K&N goodies but really don't want to do a lot more, unless it is to a new engine. I've thought about the SUPERCHARGERS but that costs big money, and I still have that same old worn out motor. WHAT DO I DO?
My understanding is that a P&P job won't give you much of anything in the RPM range where these trucks live. But I'se likes the idea of a performance rebuild!
___
I imagine that swapping both an engine and computer will no problem so long as you can locate a good one of each.
I wouldn't mind doing a performance rebuild, but that too takes $$$. Besides that, I haven't found anywhere other than Ford to get the parts. If I do the R&R job on the computer and engine, do ya'll think it will mess with the tranny?
Remember the V10 is a mod motor. It shares MANY parts with smaller sized 4.6L V8s. Manley makes piston rods for Lighting trucks, the guy building a hot V10 had to have the pistons done custom, and I sure there are more parts out there to use.
I bet if you ask around some mod motor smart guys you will find it is very do-able.

You should be able to swap out your motor with a newer version along with it's computer. The changes were internal so everything else should fit. The new motor with your performance mods would probably give you the same HP increases that rebuilding and hopping up slightly your older motor would. There are 2000+ V-10's around for sale with the corresponding computer. It sounds to me like this is the direction you'd prefer to go, rather than having to look everywhere for performance parts that basically can not be found. The guy building the V-10 in Colorado spent big, big $$$ and waited a long, long time for very few performance parts. Find a newer motor, save your sanity.
Ken has the best answer. Get a '00 or newer V10 from a wrecked truck/van and swap the motor and computer. I've seen a bunch lately go through the recycle yards. If it were me, I'd get the tranny also. Good luck.

I agree, I meant to include that, but did not. I would get the whole shooting match, engine, tranny, computer any/all peripheals that are needed to make the system complete. Then just swap the entire unit in as one piece, for best results. I talked to the guy in Colorado alot, he had major, major head-aches getting his 99 V-10 built with performance parts. Because there really isn't any off the shelf hop-up parts. He had to have pistons custom made, he had his intake extrude honed only to be told it wasn't going to make much, if any difference. For the least amount of money for the most HP/Torque it seems smartest to buy a newer, higher HP motor/tranny/computer and then if that wasn't enough grunt add a Kenne Bell or whipple type supercharger. Everyone says the bottom end is plenty strong, so superchargers seem to make the most sense for the money. A guy could do it all himself for $9,000 ? $4,500 for an low, low mileage engine, $1,000 for the tranny and $3,500 for a s/c ? Maybe that's a high estimate for price but that would probably realistically cover it don't you think ?
KARKRAFT.COM has brand new v10's for sale, at least last time i looked they did....cheap too, compared to the cost of a rebuild...
you should be able to buy a computer from a junkyard, or even your local parts department for not too much $$$.
good luck
ohh, and make sure the intake, mass air sensor, various brackets and exhaust manifolds are the same...

Basically anything and everything that is connected directly to the engine. A/C compressor, alternator, computer of course, exhaust manifolds, air cleaner assembly, etc. Get as much as you can, especially the parts that are bolted directly to the engine. If you end up having 2 airboxes, or whatever, that's OK. I would want to be sure that the wiring harness's had all been unplugged, not just cut. It will be far easier than having to find and splice in the plugs. Same with fuel lines although not nearly as critical. My truck has a remote oil filter, so if the F series has that, you'd want that too.
