Question. What transfer cases will fit 94 Bronco, (full size) Manual shift- transfer case
Crossover books say 92-96. What's the difference?
I looked at one in a 1 ton 4x4 today , about an 85 model. It looks like it would go in the bronco.
The difference I saw was shifter location and rear output. Mine is flange, other is bolted on yoke.
I can probably get the tc worth the money if I can use it.
Any advice would be much appreciated. thanks, Ron
The Tcase with the slip yoke is a BW 1356 and yours is a BW1345. They'll interchange but you'll have to change your driveshaft.
Whats wrong with theTcase in your bronco now? If the case is still good I'd rebuild it so you'll know everything in the case is working right. The #1 thing to cause the BW tcases to go bad is the oil pump went out or filter screen clogging up. They are real easy to rebuild. but thats IMO
Prev. owner installed electric shift tc , Bronco is set up for manual shift. I'd like to get the right tc back in it. It's drivable like it is, but no 4wd
you can put in any married t-case from a full size truck 1977.5 up to 1996 (NP203, NP205, NP208, BW1345, BW1356 ... ) and possibly later. T-cases from these years all use a 31 spline input and a standard 6 bolt pattern at the adapter. FYI the 1/2 tons used the same BW cases the 1 tons do (1345 and 1356) the earlier (80-86) NP 208F is my personal choice but many prefer the BW cases .... they have a slightly deeper low range. To solve the oil pump problem, crack the case open and use a small screw to retain the pump housing - it usually fails as the press fit housing has a tendancy to spin over time, which pulls the pickup out of the oil and thus the case runs dry.
Stick with a manual case as the electric shift cases are prone to problems (with the electric shift motor)
My rear driveline has a double u-joint (cv joint?) that I'll have to lose if the output on TC is not flanged. Can I do ok without it or is there too much angle? Bronco is stock height.
Thanks for the replies, Ron
If you stick with a BW case you can just swap the output yoke/flange onto the new case .... output splines remained the same throughout the above mentioned period as well (you may be able to swap the flange onto a NP case but I haven't tried it ... although I intend to swap to the later CV flange eventually - on my NP208 cases I currently have the earlier CV 'yoke' ... FYI the output flange/yoke nuts are the same for both the BW and NP cases - I had to order the part from ford once, so they outputs should theoretically be the same. Dana/Spicer only make so many types of yokes/flanges and lists only one sizes of 32 spline 1330 series outputs - 1.401" which is the same for the NP208. There are two different seal sizes on the 'yokes' but the outer diameter of those seals are the same so a simple seal swap cures that little problem)
hope it helps.
sometimes owning a ford isn't so confusing
Thanks Dave. That helps alot, if I can replace the bolt on yoke with my flange I should be good to go. The only other question is the location of the shifter. I can get all the goodies off the salvage yard truck if I can make it work nice and neat on the bronco. Iv'e done some lookin and callin and there doesn't seem to be a bronco transfer case in the state, except those out of truck's with the slip yoke on the rear . Ron
I don't think ford used a slip yoke type transfer case .... transmissions yes, but t-case? new one to me must be a 90's thing .... easy way to eliminate those is to use a case from 80-86 f-series and bronco .... all will be a fixed yoke manual shift case ... grab the cover plate from the cab as well. your 94 has the speedo VSSB on the axle so you'll have to find a way to plug the speedo hole on all cases up to 91 .... if you get a BW 1356 case you should be able to swap your current case's end housing to fix that.
Grab the case from that 85 f-350 you mentioned, swap yokes, use the speedo drive to plug the hole, and you should be good to go.
Ok, transfer case is installed. I turned out to be a bw 1345.
Tommorrow it's off to the driveline shop, Iv'e gotta get an earlier cv joint driveline shortened for the rear.
The flange would'nt swap over, I found a bolt on yoke and driveline at the boneyard. did the seal change Rockfrog suggested.
shifter hooked up easily, had to lengthen the linkage apx 3",
(took two, made one longer)
I have two questions, What wires are for the 4x4 indicator light, and will the indicator lights work w/ the 1345 tc.?
This is an old thread …however stick around someone will be by shortly to answer your question.

If you have money to spare, go for the Atlas II transfer case...then every other part of your drivetrain will be the weak link, but at least to tcase will never die no matter how hard you beat it!
89 bronco should be a BW 1356 ... yes, it'll bolt to the M5OD as long as it was a 4wd trans to begin with ... Ford was pretty standard on the drivelines in the F-series ... all fullsize trucks were 31 spline trans outputs with a six bolt new process pattern (ford clocked).
