Is it better to rebuild a transfer case or should I heave it and
try to get another one.Mine is an 88 F250 auto and I have a clunk that is consistant in bull low, seems to be alright in 4HI.What can I put in there and what should I pay? Thanks Ron
You probably have a Borg Warner 1356 case. You can find them new for $1000. I purchased one from 4xheaven (www.4xheaven.com) in NY state and had it shipped to my residence.

I think I'd try to rebuild it myself. I've done a couple of transfer cases with my wife. {Her memory is better than mine.} Nowadays I take pictures along the way with a computer camera (no film needed.) The last transmission we did was a 727 Dodge, and my buddy had bought a how-to video. I think it was an EXCELLENT video, and well worth the price. I don't know if they make one for your particular transfer case, but if they do, you will see how really easy it is. I was scared of transmissions before, but now I'd jump right in. They even show you how to improve your transmission along the way. Just make sure you have a long bench with a clean white sheet on it so you can keep track of things.
Contact: Mike P.@standardtransmissions.com for good parts pricing and hand-holding, and get some sort of Ford or B-W shop manual. T-cases just aren't that complicated.
Apples-and-oranges, I know, but I just did a NP205 myself, using photocopies I made at the downtown library from old factory service manuals. Stuck the photocopies in plastic protectors, and those in a three ring binder--who cares about greasy fingerprints? They wipe off!
Thanks guys,I am definately going to rebuild my Transfer case.I spoke with a fella who has a tranny shop that collects up as much stuff as he can and says that he has loads of good parts for my case.He is a good honest man and he says that I can get out of it quite reasonably. Thanks again, Ron
Hi, it depends on how the driveshaft is hooked to the transfer case as to which case you have if it slips in like a normal driveshaft in a trans then you have the borg warner if it bolts on like the driveshaft to the rear then it is a new process there should be a tag on it somewhere to tell you what it is if it is a new process the tag is right along side the driveshaft on the drivers side of the truck and it will have a number with the name my F250 has a new process 208.
