Dumb Brake question

So, when I installed my new MC/Brake Booster set, I didn't put the rubber cone-shaped piece on the end of the push rod coming out of the front of the booster. I can no longer find it and am pretty sure it got thrown away. Is it important to have that piece on there, or will it work regardless? If necessary, I can order another booster, take the piece out of it, and return the rest. I'd only do that if there is no other course of action I can take. Thanks for any help with this I can get.

So then the next guy that buys the returned booster gets it with no boot?
Why not just buy a replacement boot?
