I Seem to Remember . . .

. . . A thread that mentioned you can quickly identify a 6000 vs 7500 GVW (2” vs 2 1/2” brake shoes) F250 hub/drum assembly by wether or not the screws that hold the drums to hub flange are present. My 7500 GVW 66 truck does not have those screws, and I’ve never seen the front of a 6000 GVW truck to compare. I’m trying to get a guy to send me photos before I purchase a set of drum/hubs for my truck as spares. Is this correct, or am I full of excrement? Don’t answer the second part of that question, please.

It wasn't anything to do with GVW. The 2 1/2" brakes first appeared in 1966 so any 1965 F250 got the 2" wide brakes. Any 64-72 F250 4x4 also got the 2" brakes. And lots of 1966 F250 with the 7500 GVW also got the 2" wide brakes. The 2 1/2" wide brakes were just an extra cost regular production option.

The optional GVW in 1966 was 4800 lbs. There was no 6000 lbs option in a 2WD.

The price for the option on this price sheet was $22.90. Only available on F250 2x4

The 2" wide did use the 3 countersunk screws to help hold the drum in place. The hubs were separate from the drum. Left side of the following pictures.

With the heavy duty 2 1/2" brakes the hub was integrated with the drum. Right side of the following pictures.

Thanks. What , if any, additional upgrades, are there on the 7500 GVW rated trucks? Was there a “package” of upgrades included, like better springs? My rear springs seem to have more leaves in the pack compared to other 66 F250’s I’ve seen, and it does ride high, which I do not mind.Or, were the upgrades “a la carte”, so to speak? My truck’s just an up-fitted Custom Cab, not a C.S..

The standard 7500 GVW trucks are supposed to require the optional 2400 (actually 2450 they didn't update that number from 1965 in the Salesmans book) lbs. rear springs. But the 1966 model year 2450 lbs. springs were a pack of 8 leaves with the bottom leaf being 5/8" thick - not counting auxiliary springs.

C6TA-5560-T engineering ID number
C6TZ-5560-L Part number
Last row of each chart.

If you look at the very back end of your leaf springs you may be able to find the engineering ID number on them. It will only be stamped on one leaf in each pack.

As another example of what the stampings might look like - different numbers than you'd find, but just to show they can be stamped a bit faint in some cases but should be there.
