Oil Pressure Problem
I have a question about oil pressure in a 1994 Ford E-150 with a 5.0 engine.
Recently i discovered that my van has a low oil pressure problem. In the beginning i thought it was with the gauge, but after using an oil pressure tester i discovered that the oil pressure at idle is between 10 and 20 psi. When revving it goes to barely 30 psi.
I changed oil and oil filter to a thicker and much more expensive kind, i think it was 20 over 50. After that the oil pressure was sort of ok, but still too low when at stand-still with the gearbox in D. If i put it in P or N, the revs are a bit higher and the vans gauge stops bouncing.
With this low oil pressure i went on a vacation from the Netherlands to Portugal and back. Alltogether that is more than 4000 km which would be about 2500 miles. During this trip the van worked perfectly, it didnt even used any oil! i did make sure though that i didnt stop the van whilst in D when the engine was hot.
I am very tempted to take off the oil pan and replace the oil pump and screen, but i hear that this is a major pain due to a cross member being in the way... i read that the engine must be lifted, and all top components must be removed when doing so. This seems to me like a bit of overkill, especially when it turns out the oil pickup is fine.
What would you guys do in this situation? Just let it run as it is? Or is there a workaround that might fix the oil pressure
regards. Willem
