Looking to install the "old style" brake pressure switch in my 49..... any recommendations on a reliable switch or are they all made from one supplier?
I would expect more than one supplier makes pressure switches, they're also not something you'd need to mail order, either. I would expect you could get a quality part locally at NAPA or any other decent parts store. Try to find one that operates at low pressure so the brake lights come on faster. That's one of the bigger downsides to using a pressure switch, there's no adjusting how quickly and at what pressure they close the circuit. A lot of guys in the past have sworn by motorcycle switches as they go on fast, and some have said they go to the Harley dealer, but be prepared to pay a premium there for the name.
Most auto supply stores around here carry them, was wondering if there all the same switch. I'm using a motorcycle style switch now..... (2nd one in 5 years) not happy with this brand, cost was $10 bucks.
When I did my truck I tried three separate switches from three suppliers...they all leaked... I went with electric under the dash used turnbuckle too adjust the 'turn on' point on the switch
I had one of those fluid low pressure switches. Leaked and did not work. Went with a mechanical one from Summit. would have to look it up to which one.
Was thinking that switch was to big but specs shows it's fairly compact & will work with my current brake peddle setup. I see where Summit Racing offers 3 brake switches of that style, (one is the same switch as johnnylawmotors). I'll order one to replace the motorcycle switch I have now. Thanks for every one's input.
A specific socket is made to install the switch on the rear of the MC .DO NOT use an adjustable wrench !!
Really? I've never seen the need to use something like a $60-$70 J37117 socket for the brake switch... I'm sure I've use an adjustable a few times or a deep socket or similar...
When using a Crescent wrench to install it distorts the switch & it leaks . The specifically made socket works great . Learned this from a man who is an old time auto electric wizard . Having installed 2 switches in the past with the adjustable wrench & both times they leaked over a period of time . Last one was w/ the socket & no leaks for 2 yrs. . Am sold on the socket which was borrowed . The elec. wizard insisted upon it . . Have know him for 51 yrs.
