Ever seen this?

*crossposted in bullnose forum as this is an 87-remove if not ok*

Found one other post similar. Probably happened before but my mechanic was amazed. Had to post here for posteritys sake.

Had all 4 brakes done as well as wheel bearings on all 4 wheels in February by a mobile mechanic. He has a 1 year warranty on labor and parts. Think the cause of this would have something to do with the work he did? How could this have happened?

Didn't take a real good look as I was in traffic...but from the looks of the edited pic I got the outer bearing is blasted. Axle rod is still attached to hub.

Yeah, I had that happen on a GM truck yrs ago.. spinning, gained traction, snapped the axle at the diff, and it migrated out.

Crazy! Pretty sure the rod and splines were still good (not snapped) as I stuck it back in put it in 4wd and got off the road. I don't know though. Didn't pull it out all the way.

What’s amazing is that it’ll hold the truck up that far out…. I can’t remember the extent of the damage on mine, was 25+ yrs ago. But iirc, full float, I think all I needed was to replace the axle shaft.. I can’t remember though. 93 Chevy 2500.

Housing broke on the middle axle of my dad's GMC 6x6. It wasn't out quite as far as your pics, but it was out there.....

Holding on by a thread! Should be some damn tough steel with the job it's doing.

Axle & tire

I was towing a 54 F 100 with our wrecker and the whole right axle and tire came completely out.
I had to roll the tire and balance it with the axle about a block then pick the truck up from the rear.
At least it did not cause any accidents or injure anyone.

Crazy! At least you had a hauler! Haha. I just used my offroad jack...lifted it enough to slide er back in and slowly got to safety. Definitely could have been worse.

Full floating axle.
These are not the best photos but it looks like the outer wheel bearing is destroyed (inner race is still on the axle housing. Possibly from overloading or lack of lubrication. I assume the axle nut is still on the axle too.
The inner axle bearing looks to be in good condition but it's dry. Another clue for lack of lube.

Those are pumpkin style, like 9” rear ends. Not the same as our era of truck.

The axles in 9” rear ends are held in with backing plates bearings etc. at the wheel end.

the 8.8 the axles are held in with clips and pin in the rear end.

same thing happens on an 8.8 if you snap the axle.

Mechanics paperwork said Semi-floating? I don't know for sure. I do know it's a 10.25 based on the tag.
Maybe he didn't pack them well enough?
I haven't been carrying any heavy loads in the back...but it was converted to a flatbed so maybe that's enough to put extra weight on the bearings/axle. I assume they were never replaced before though and Ive had this truck for 2yrs...it's only been 7 months since new install.

Pretty sure the axle nut is still on there. The whole tire/wheel came off with the rod.

Hmm...the axle tag indicates they're 10.25. But same difference I guess. No clips and pins.

Probably should have heard some noise back there for about 10 years
Combination failures like that are expensive

Yipes-
yeah, that's not all that unheard of in a semi- floater, but the full floater should be a lot less prone to that sort of... self- disassembly.

If the locknut unlocked, well, there you'd be. But the inner race of the outer bearing looks like it's still there, so...
outer bearing failure??? Full- floaters have such oversized bearings that it's gotta be a material or lubrication failure.

I'm impressed that the axle's that far out and still taking the load.

There was a noise, but it sounded like it was coming from the front end. Ball joints need replacement and was gonna dig into all the old bushings and start replacing. Just did the tie rod ends and sway bar so thought maybe that was the noise I was hearing. Just a loud clunking though...only really when turning.

Well luckily a bearing failure should be covered under the mechanics warranty. Had to do an emergency brake job (all four) and he replaced the bearings too. Talk about expensive!
