Transmission/Truck Lurch at start up

My truck (7.3L 4.3 gearing) lurches back on start up. The colder it is the more pronounced it is. Is this normal? Do you guys and gals see this in your trucks?

Thanks,
Bob

I let mine idle for 10-15 seconds, engine speed slows, then select D or R. I think it’s related to a cold engine start, similar to how a choke works on a carb. My $0.02

Same here. Wait until the high idle kicks off before moving the gear selector

Not related to the topic but I will usually put mine in neutral before I shift to D or R. Habit I’ve had for a long time.

I'm pretty sure he's not moving the shifter. It's doing that as soon as it's started. Wierd.

I don't think he's talking about a shifting issue, it's an electronic transmission lurch. Mine does it if I'm sitting on level ground with the warm transmission in neutral. I can rev on the accelerator and the transmission will lurch an amount that you can feel, but it doesn't move any measurable distance. I don't think it's normal by dated standards, but I do think it's a product of the electronic TCM on newer vehicles. So, I don't think there is anything wrong, I think it's just the check on the TCM at startup or any other time.

Google "Ford 10r140 CDF Hub" and you will find lots of issues. There is a bushing that moves and causes this.

There is a TSB do if you have a good service department they will take care of it if you under warranty time/miles.

Exactly, it’s a start up issue. Cold or warm. Not just the first start of the day.

in the video I am remote starting the truck. The cab is empty.

When the truck is in park, or neutral, there shouldn’t be any hydraulic fluid pressure applied to the clutches which is why it is concerning me. It is making me think that there is a bad seal.

I was under the impression it was the clunk or lurch you get when moving to D or R from a cold start up. Mine does not have the symptoms you are experiencing while in P.

My 2023 7.3L does something similar when I start it, usually just sound though because I always set the park brake when I shut down. It sounds like its 'rolling against the parking pawl' when I start it up. But its not every start up. I haven't worried about it. It is odd behavior though, never had a vehicle do this before. I usually notice it most in the morning when I start in the garage - maybe because the sound is amplified in the closed space?

My truck has done that a few times on startup, just a small lurch. On one occasion, maybe a year ago (?) I started the truck after filling up at a gas station and it lurched HARD - I thought a car hit me in the ***. My wife and kids said “what was that?!?!”. I looked in the mirrors and there was no vehicle behind me. Only done that once.

I think the 10sp transmission sucks, tbh. It does it’s job well enough, but it’s rough around the edges.
