Fuel gauge showing empty - testing procedure
This is a 1977. The REAR tank above the spare tire is the MAIN tank. The MIDSHIP tank must be 'auxiliary'. This is why the gauge works when when you short the pin to ground with the switch on AUX. Since the sender is showing high resistance, the guage is reading empty, and thus why when I plug in the midship tanke, even though its full, it shows empty. The sender is the issue here.
However, on my truck, to 'get it to run'. A mechanic bypassed the tank valve and simply plugged the hose to the end straight into the midship tank and unplugged the valve. So, the truck is drawing from midship, no matter what the switch and valve say. That way they didnt have to replace both tanks and senders or explain to an old lady which is main and what is what. Fill up the midship tank and drive. Even if it says empty.
I'm going to test this out later.
One thing that would be helpful is the 'routing' of the hoses on the FACTORY tank selector valve. Anyone have that schematic for a 1977?
That's what they did.
They put a rubber hose between the midship tank and the fuel pump, so it's only drawing from that tank no matter what. I think this is the issue. I'll pump the fuel out of midship and replace or check out that sender since its easy to get to.
I need a new sender for both tanks. Does anyone know if they are the same? I wouldn't think so, but there is only one sender listed everywhere.

Ford changed over the years.
According to Rich’s diagram, if you read the text, the side/midship tank IS the main tank. Not the other way around like I think you are calling it.
So again, don’t worry about what the switch says. Just worry about what you know.
That the midship tank has gas.
The midship tank is the only one connected.
That gauge reads full when you ground that tank’s sending unit wire.
Sounds to me like you have a bad sending unit in your midship tank. Maybe the float deteriorated. Maybe the rheostat has failed. Maybe something else went wrong.
They do get old and fail.
But what I said earlier still holds true. Ford changed which tank they called “Main” and which tank they called “Aux” over the years.
So again, don’t worry about what it says on the label. Just what you know.
