I was driving my truck last night and had 1/2 tank of fuel left. Stoped by the store on the way home and when i turned my truck back on the fuel gauge is spiked past full and wont move unless I turn the truck off. I fugure a ground wire or somthing came off. Maybe Im wrong. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look??
Go back to the tank and take off the fuel sending unit wire. With the key in run and someone watching the fuel gauge, ground the sending unit wire. The gauge should swing full scale empty or full. Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air. The fuel gauge should swing full scale the opposite direction.
If it passes this test, then the wiring and the gauge are ok, and you have a sending unit problem inside the tank.
The problem I have with my F-250 SD V-10 gas gauge is that sometimes when I fill up, the gauge reacts normally. Other times when I fill up, it will take me driving about 20 miles before my gauge will FINALLY creep up to full...can anyone explain that???
Might be something a little sticky with the needle movement, especially if someone has put a white face gauge kit on it.
The gauge movements are normally damped, especially the fuel gauge. The sending unit sloshes up and down very rapidly sometimes when driving, and they do not want the needle swinging up and down trying to follow it.
