Trying to get the 77 5.8 to run. Fuel in tank is clean and good. I can suck the fuel up with a hose to where it comes up on the block. It was pumping fuel when cranking. However, I don't see that happening now. I used a CLEAR tube to attach to the fuel pipe coming in front of the block. I can suck gas with my mouth and fill that clear tube, if I block it with my thumb, it stays in the hose. If I don't, it just drains back.
Do these have a check valve? No matter what I do, while cranking, the fuel is not being pumped out.
No check valve, in the system. It should hold prime. If the fuel pump (out port from pump) does not squirt fuel, as you turn it over and the eccentric cam make a rotation, then....
1. You are out of gas
2. Your pick up tube filter sock is crudded over.
3. You could have a hole in a rubber or steel fuel line and the system is sucking air.
4. Your fuel pump has died. Sorry for your loss.
Well, since I can draw fuel from the tube going into the carburetor with my mouth, That would rule out everything in the list except the pump. Guess it's new pump time.
Yes I just have the trouble shooting steps remembered and saved on my computer. So I just post them all. I read where you could pull fuel from the tank to the in port of the pump by mouth. Cough cough. So yes you have gas, the pick up tube filter sock is clean and no dry rot or rust holes in the rubber or steel lines.
I would get the BEST pump you can and NOT the cheapest the parts house offers. Chiny part are junky now days. If you get one, you better get 2 to have a spare on hand when the 1st one lays down on ya.

And I wouldn't leave it in the truck in a box behind the seat for years on end. I did that once, then when I needed it, it lasted a few hours and I had to get another. Now my spare mech pump is a new Carter sealed in a bag in it's box in my basement. I am still gonna set up an electric with provision to bypass the mechanical in case of road side failure.
If you are into spares and think about carrying a spare ignition box, carry it in a box, marked so it's upside down in storage.

I wonder too. Used to be I just went to the parts store and they always did well.
You also have to watch the new motor driven pump for high psi out put.
It has been posted on here a few time of guys having high psi with new pumps.
I also had one a few months back put out 18+ psi on a non-Ford.
If I had the air filter on and the windshield in the car I would not have know the psi was over powering the needle and seat.
Took it back and got a replacement of a different brand, more money, but it is working fine.

How did that taste? Why once I had mounted & plumbed a FPR to use with Edelbrock carb, I left it in place with the Holley carb even though the Holley would handle the stock engine driven pump's 7 psi on it now. (After all, the Holley run fine for years without any FPR ). I just readjusted it from the 5.5 psi used as suggested with the Edelbrock ... to the 6.5 psi as Holley suggested & calibrates their carbs at ... @ sea level.
