fuel sender problem
LMC send a new sender installed and while I put it I noticed I had about a quarter tank of fuel. When I started engine needle went all the way to FULL and the gradually went past E (not visible needle)! Any suggestions next!
Frustrated! This is on a 54 F100 (converted to 12 volt) replaced 239 Y block with a 351w and C6 transmission. Thanks!
Let's first make sure your gauge is OK. With the power of the truck OFF, remove the fuel take sender unit wire from the top bolt of the fuel tank and ground it to the frame. Turn to the key ignition to ON. The fuel gauge should peg full. If it does, you just verified that your fuel gauge is good.
Now, DRAIN THE TANK, remove the fuel gauge (carefully) from the tank. With the ignition off, install the sending unit wire to the top insulated bolt and then attach a new wire from the chassis of the truck (ground) to any one of the bolt holes that attached the sender to the tank. Now manually adjust the float with your hands. Your mimicking the fuel tank levels. Move the float all the way up. Does it show full on the gauge? What you just did is what we did with the earlier gauge test. It's basically like full-ground. Move it halfway down. Does the gauge show half? Sometimes the linkages have to be bent a little.
If you are trying to use one of the repop/China/Vintique senders with the stock gauge it will never work. They do not match the gauge. Try to find an original or NOS FORD sender...
