If you have a C6 it should have a 164-tooth flex plate. It uses a 9-tooth pinion. Your block plate has to be for a small block with a 164-tooth flex plate if you used a block plate for a 184-tooth flywheel it would set the starter too far away from the ring gear. And the starter must be for an automatic transmission. If the 9-tooth starter you had was for a manual transmission it would grind because the manual transmissions flywheel is only 3/8 inch from the block plate an auto trans flex plate is 3/4 inch from the block plate. I think you have a bunch of mismatched parts.

I bought a scrap truck. I only bought it for the engine. I'm not sure what transmission was behind this motor. I didn't get it when I bought the truck. Sounds like I may need a new flex plate with the 9 tooth starter. I'll let ya all know what i find out.

If it were me I’d drop the starter and engage it out of the bell housing and
assure it runs correctly. It sounds like it might be binding when engaging the ring gear.
