Frame Thoughts

65 frame.
Going to restore to original condition. Cab needs more work that the frame or bed.
That said, the bed is off right now.

My options are:
Frame -
- Wire brush as much as possible (4" angle grinder with steel brush)
- Wire brush & media blast
- Just media blast

Coating -
- Spray Paint
- POR15 or Eastwood Encapsulation

I am looking to win zero car shows. I want a frame that will be adequate, daily driver under nice weather conditions. Maybe 1,000 miles a year at extreme best. No hauling or towing.

That said, media blasting will cost more than just wire brushing as will POR15/ Encapsulation.

What are your thoughts?

The frame is in solid condition, however it does have 60 years of life on it, so cleaning it, even with a wire 4" angle grinder will not get it all.

The rear cab cross member is real bad, so if anyone has a link to a new piece - please share.

Im not trying to stay cheap, just practical.

Get the surface rust off with a wire wheel, and then spray it black. Use a product like Wool Wax or Fluid Film to keep the moisture out of the nooks and crannies.

Paint black then fluid film or just fluid film?

the film says it restores black to parts. So just curious if i need to paint prior to application?

That frame looks a little more rusty than my 81 F100 frame was and I was building a driver.
Finish pulling the cab, motor / trans and the suspension front & rear so you have just the frame.
Wire brush and wheel it the best you can.

Get Osph (sp?) acid, got a gallon off Ebay or Amazon, and a spray bottle and spray the frame getting it wet and it will seep into the cranys.
The acid turns the rust black as it converts it. After a few day I hosed it off and let it dry a few more days. With the conversion it will not rust if left out side.
I then got a gallon of TSC brand black paint with the hardner and sprayed the frame. I really laid it on wet so it would get into the crannys.

For the suspension parts I did the wire brush and paint brush to make them look good.
Any parts that needed to be replaced was before painting and installed back on the frame to make it a roller.
The white is dried acid

Painted

When I was doing the frame I was also working on the cab, floors, rockers, cab corners, lower rear door posts.
Once the patches seams were sealed, 2 coats of seam sealer top & bottom, then 2 coats of roll on bed liner top & bottom I put the cab back on the farme.

Mine has been done now 5 years and 28K+ and I still get thumbs up and stopped to talk about it.
I take it to cars & coffee and shows but to win but the shows I go to donate back into the citys, towns, schools and that is what my money goes to gone to the shows. I also joined a club because they also give back.

But I think the frame has to be blasted so more $$$.
A gallon of acid and black paint would be less than half the powder coat.

The powdercoater blasts the frame. We just had one done on a 57 Bel Air.

I’ve always sandblasted and painted. If you can’t do it yourself or afford to have it done then clean the best you can, angle grinder with a wire wheel, etc., use a rust converter, and then paint. IMHO for your end goal/use I would not powder coat or use POR15.
