Frame work

Well got my Crew cab long bed down to pretty much frame and axles, and few little things like bags and motor mounts. Now back the other way, time to build it back up.

For the Resto guys, what was your procedure on restoring the frame? Did you go all the way to bare frame?

For actually restoring the frame, seems like POR15 is the way to go? Any cheaper alternatives out there?

Let me know your step by step, what you did and what you used to restore your frame. And pictures would be nice! Thanks!

When I was 14 I had mine sand blasted (didn't take the cab off, or drive train out) then I brushed on some black tremclad. If I had it tore down to the state yours is in now i'd probably get it blasted then I would spray on some higher quality primer and paint.

I bought a "cheapie" 100lb sandblaster from Harbor Freight and sandblasted the frame after stripping it bare.
After that I sprayed two coats of Rustoleum red primer and finally coated it with two coats of ValSpar semi-gloss black industrial coating.

Had my frame sandblasted also. Sprayed with a couple coats of epoxy primer and a couple coats of Sherwin-Williams frame paint.

Hey mike, that looks great. I have a sandblasted but can never get enough air to run it. What did you use for a compressor?

Thanks.
5HP 2 stage Ingersol-Rand compressor w/ 80 gallon tank. I use a ½" hose to feed the sandblaster instead of the recommended 3/8".
If I really stay on it, I'll have to stop and let the compressor catch up, especially if the tip is worn which is a common issue with the blaster I use.

Thanks everyone. Still gotta decide if I'm taking the axles off or not. I'd like to but not sure if it's really necessary.

I love POR15 in that it adheres excellent if you properly degrease and apply their metal prep. One thing I cant figure out though with POR15 is its tendency to bubble (gets little air bubbles trapped in the paint kind of thing). I have applied POR to parts at the same time and some it bubbles on and others it goes on smooth as can be.

It does fade over time when exposed to sunlight. Their topcoat will take care of that. Just apply the topcoat while the POR15 is still wet.

interesting rear shackle angle.

How is the clearance between front diff and 2wd crossmember? Will you notch it or not necessary?

Not sure at how many pounds it's rated for. But I do know it's 100 PSI max. I also found out their firestone bags with 4 inch spacers.

What do you mean clever? Cause it's sitting outside the frame?
It was close when I pulled it off. I'm not sure how it will be when I set the ZF5, but will notch if needed.

I have used red Rustoleum, Epoxy and Eastwood Rust Encapsulator.

The red Rustoleum works well with basic prep and also on clean blasted steel.

Epoxy for clean blasted steel.

Eastwood Rust Encapsulator for basic prep.

All work well used appropriately. For me "basic prep" means 1) thoroughly de-grease and pressure wash or steam clean 2) remove loose paint and rust 3) coat.

I generally use Rustoleum SG or satin black for the final coat(s).
