I know this question has been asked a skillion times before. Most of those threads are pretty old, and inventory of available shocks ain't what it once was. So, here we go again.
So we have a '65 F100 with drop beams and Explorer coil springs. Ride quality is OK, but I'm getting more "bounce" than I'd like. I bought new Monroe standard shocks when I first got the Ol' Furd on the road a couple years back. The ride quality was noticeably improved when I replaced the front springs. But when i roll through a dip or over speed bumps I get a few bounces until it settles....like wore out shocks.
Could it be that the Monroe's are already wore out after only 5000 miles? Or just not enough to begin with?
I don't want something so stiff that it rides like a truck.....(yeah, I know. It IS a truck).
I have Monroe Gas Magnums (34900) with 79 suspension and a anti sway bar from a 78 F350. They are pretty stiff. I did have one blow out and start leaking fluid a couple of months ago, but they had a lifetime warranty, so they sent me a new one.
I’ve never been dissatisfied with KYB’s, but then again, I’m not asking the world of them. I always wanted to see how Bilstein’s were, but I don’t think they make them for my application, and I know I don’t need performance shocks anyway.
With a modified suspension, you can really get into the weeds on shock selection. Does djm recommend anything?
They have their own line of shocks, most likely rebranded something else, then tack on a premium price

30K is not unreasonable life. Ride not too harsh?

Yeah, I looked to see if Bilstein had anything, but not for these old fords.
Thanks fellers. I reckon I'll go with the KYBs. I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced an overly harsh ride with 'em.
Monroe has been a "go-to" shock for a long time, but it seems, like a lot of things, quality has suffered in recent years.

I am using Bilsteins on my 64 F250. Yes, the fitment was not perfect but I got these brackets from my local 4x4 supply place... Still not installed but here's a photo. Im replacing the OG shocks.
Mikey, one more vote for the KYB Gasadjust. One of the first upgrades I did to my 65, along with new springs and bushings. It rides very well still about five years and 50.000 miles later. I can take freeway onramps at the same speed as in my BMW E30. (it has Bilstiens).
Went with you fellers suggestion on the KYBs. The ride is a bit firmer than I'd really like, but I'm not getting the "ThreeBounceReaction" on dips and bumps. So big improvement there
Not "modern Smooth", but overall, not bad.
Thanks Fellers!
