Spare bolt

Just went out to check the condition of my air filter and noticed a random bolt sitting on the valve cover. I just bought this truck less than a month ago from TX and had it shipped to WA. The truck runs great. No oil leaks or leaks of any kind. It's hard to tell if the bolt has even been installed before. Any ideas as to what it is for?

never installed. Its a spare just for your use.

Probably someone will be able to identify.

Impressive. Someone dropped the 10mm stud instead of the 10mm socket.

You can tell from the thread locker on the one end that it's never been installed. Fish it out with a magnet.

Hopefully it was an extra that ended up not needing to go in!

Almost looks like it was set there and forgotten during final engine assembly, perhaps. Looks like it could be a pivot stud for an alternator or other engine accessory?

Take a look at the other brackets and assemblies on the front of the engine, and see if there's a match.

Thanks for the input, but I don't think it's a head stud. Doesn't look the same.

I figured that would be where it would come from, the alternator or an accessory. Problem is, it's pretty tight in there, hard to see. This weekend I will take another look.

My Dad had some warranty work done on his 1977 F150. I found a 3/8" breaking bar under the seat (an odd ball tool to us). In small town America I took it back to the Ford Dealership to return it to the mechanic. Nope, didn't belong to anybody. They called it a Ford Factory Accessory. I still use it.

I think I figured it out. Looks a lot like a fan shroud bolt to me. I can't find any other bolts that look similar. First pic is the spare bolt.

I'll add it to the rest of my random bolts that I will never use. Makes me feel good that it wasn't something important.
