I replaced the distributor on my truck and now I can’t get it to fire. I’m getting gas to the carb, and I have spark. I think the timing is off. How do I set the base timing?
You have to pull the distributor out and reset it. the gears are cut at an angle so you have to lead it a bit.
Or you can just put it on #1 TDC and move the #1 plug wire to where the rotor is pointing then reset the plug wires. it makes no difference where #1 is on the cap.
I’m finding TDC with a wooden dowel in cylinder 1 while turning on flywheel with a wrench. However, it turns easy until a point where it doesn’t. Why is that?
Probably another cylinder is coming up on compression. it should bleed off fast.
You have to be on the compression stroke. it's usually easiest to pull the coil wire and have someone bump the starter with the plug out. when it blows compression you know it's the right stroke, then turn the engine back to TDC on the marks.
