I am trying to diagnose whether or not my timing chain has slipped. I have a l986 F-150 with a TFI-IV ignition system. The vehicle turns over, is getting fuel to the plugs, the plugs receive a spark, but will not start. I have manually rotated the crankshaft approximately 10 times. I realize that with properly timed motors, when the rotor is pointing at the number one spark plug wire terminal in the distributor cap and the zero degree timing marks are aligned, the number one piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. However, when aligned as just described, the rotor points to the number two plug in the firing order. Also, my timing chain is showing 18-19 degrees of excess play when I test for excessive chain movement. Are these symtoms of a timing chain that has slipped and would this cause the vehicle not to start at all?
One of the symptoms my car had when the timing chain jumped, besides not starting, is it sounded like it "wanted" to start, but the cranking speed was very erratic going up and down in speed.
When you are at top dead center, the rotor should already be past the number 1 plug wire. Your timing is probably set somewhere around 10-12 degrees before top dead center...and I believe the rotor rotates counter clockwise on the Fords, so make sure you're looking in the right direction.
I have an 86 F-150. My timing chain has slipped. When the rotor is pointing at the number one spark plug wire terminal in the distributor cap and the 0-degree timing marks are aligned, the number one piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. This is a necessary step to replace the timing chain and sprockets. How do I find TDC when my chain has drastically slipped?
