The rusty mess looked really nasty. It was built up thick and just about what you would expect from the earlier pic above. But I was still not convinced it had caused any potential engine problems. Like I had already stated, the oil had no signs of contamination. The engine was not using coolant. So just maybe this leak was fairly new before the truck got parked. I can at least hope.

After some effort put forth on my part, everything was cleaned up best I could. I slid shop rags under the balance shaft keeping debris from falling thru. The cam is clean and shows no indication coolant had leaked or sprayed down there or anywhere else not easily visible. I used a vacuum cleaner that was necked down to a much smaller hose to get close while cleaning everything off.

Something I did NOT use was any power tools with abrasives to clean the gasket surfaces. What you see is the original machined faces here. Just like they were when brand new.

Definitely had some coolant in that valley for quite a while to be rusted like that
Most likely why it locked up
Hydraulic lock and possible bent rods is the result, if too much coolant gets in the cylinders
You are still locked up tight right?
Planning to tear the heads off next, right?
Be interested to see what the bores and pistons / valves look like
