I know I did not say to slap a clutch on it. Back in the 90’s when I worked at the dealership we would replace the clutch pulley and field coil if that is all that was wrong. I would not assume that the compressor is coming apart and throwing schrapnel into the system. Are you 100% sure that the compressor is the problem and that the bearings in the pulley did not fail? I’m not.

No I am not. Yet, the mid 90s is a pretty new compressor if you were dealing with FS6 and FS10 at the dealer, correct? This guy's is 36 years old per him stating all original. I would put zero time, nor effort into it as well as the rest of the system. Fix it once and correctly or leave it alone.

The 88 has a crap condenser and very, very few folks run R12 anymore. Safe to assume was shot up with 134A with mineral oil still in it and sent out the door. So the head pressure was wild for a compressor never designed for it. Just like my 88 was and always cooled like crap before proper rebuild

Pulling the orifice tube will reveal how the compressor was before the clutch failure. $1 says full of junk.

So because you replaced the clutch pulley on a late 80s year old truck in the 90s, which was about 30 years ago, it's a relevant fix today? 30+ years of wear and tear on an original system vs a 12 year old truck max or newer at the same time is something completely different....

I said slap a clutch on it
That is if the compressor spins freely
You do not know why the hub rubber melted yet
Neither do I
If the air gap is too small, it will overheat the clutch and burn out the hub
Those clutch hub parts are cheap and worth a shot
I recently fixed the air on a 1997 that has the original compressor that just needed an air gap adjustment for the clutch being inop
Been driving it around in 104 degree heat with great air now
