I found a 3.54 dana 60 in a 75 at the junkyard and I got to thinking it might make my 240 a bit more drivable than the 4.10 it now has. Does anyone know if the spring pad widths are the same on the 67-72s and the 73-39s? I know the frames are wider.
This could be a poor man's version of overdrive; 3.54 gears with some 33 inch tall tires. Then stick a manual tranny like a T-18 or maybe a 3 speed behind my C/4. A friend of mine did this with a chevy. He had a 454 turbo 400 in a dually that he drug these humongous loads around with and it had a muncie pickup 4 speed behind the turbo 400. We had a local guy with a driveline shop and I think he got the connecting shaft made for under $100.
So anyway you could use second or third for around town and on the jobsite or towing and shift the manual into high when you got up to highway speed.
