Strange front end sound
I have a 2004 F-250 4X4 6.0 crew cab with 170k on the clock. I have noticed when I hit a bump I hear a noise that sounds like a chain rattling. It has autolocking hubs with manual engage on the hub. While traveling around 35 mph and shifting into 4 high the rattleing stops. Then put it back in 2-wheel drive, and about 10 seconds later the rattling sounds come back. With the truck parked, I pried off the front center covers and noticed I could wiggle the hubs and can hear the metallic clanking sound. The hub wiggle seems to be very little but I don't know how much play is too much. I suspect there is something wrong with the hubs, the universal joints, or ball joints. The front shocks, track bar and sway bar link bushings have been replaced. Other suspension drive components are original.
SInce I have never messed with front ends other than replacing shock and brakes, I really don't know where to start in finding out what it is. Any advice is appreciated.
