dreaded clunk

havent posted in awhile, 2000 F250 psd, 256000 miles, nothing changed except water pump, and normal maintanence, now I have the clunking noise in the front end, I check the post back to 28, sound like some guys have problems with the stabilizer post, I completely remove mine and still have the clunking sound. tell me something else to look for, I changed ball joints 50,000 miles ago.thanks for any info..

When does the clunking occur?

Could be wheel hubs/unit bearings, sway bar link bushings, etc...

it occurs when hitting bumps in the road, I thought I had it figured out. I always leave my hitch receiver in, I thought it was bouncing around making the thump, I was wrong, i have checked the cab mount, sway bar bushings are good, I compltely removed it, still had the same sound. I have not checked aany hub bearings, whats the procedure for that?thanks for your help

Is it 4x4? Make sure your hubs are both unlocked. If it the stock auto/lock units, they have a tendency to fail and they will stay in the locked.

Jack up the wheel.Grab it at 6 and 12 and see if there is any play. There should be none.If there is it will either be the hub bearings or ball joints.

I don't think hubs and wheel bearings will not cause any noticeable "clunk"... If the wheel bearing is going you'll hear a squealing & scratching type noise that stays pretty constant coming from the wheel well of the bad bearing. The Hub assembly tends to make a ratcheting or clicking noise when not functioning properly. Clunking usually points to either ball joints or droopy front leaf springs (with 250,000+ miles, trust me) Jethro does it sound like you're dropping a brick on your frame somewhere up front when you hit a bump or pothole? Like a dull thud? Also, try going into a parking lot and turning full lock left and right and driving in a circle. Listen for any clunking in the front end. And HeidiNMax is right, if it would be a wheel bearing you would be able to rock the wheel back on forth on it's vertical axis with the truck jacked up. Doesn't sound like it bearings to me though...

99 F250 SD V 10 my clunk under the d/s floorboard comes and goes. When it does happen it is at low speed breaking. So far I have changed the sway bar bushings and the links both which were a little worn. The noise is gone for now however I do not think that I have completely cured the problem. Any advice? What is the largest tire that I can fit on the truck with stock rims and lift?
Thanks
Bob H

I too have the same clunking sound at low speeds. Hitting any bumps comes right through and sounds like the d/s front wheels coming off. Checked all the components up front and nothing is loose. I have a suspension lift with 37" TOYO mt's, and the truck is only 2 months old. I am going to jack it up and check for play. A buddy of mine replaced the neoprene bushings up front and it went away. He had a 1 year older truck with the same lift and tires etc.

gross30,
Same here, Lift replaced the front spring pack. I still get it. Low speed, louder when ambient temp is cooler. Lift shop said it was in the cab mounts. I still haven't chased it. I'd think rear spring shackle on the front springs. Noise when colder rather than warmer would point to rubber/neoprene either in the spring, spring bracket or said "cab mount" as the lift shop said.

I just let it go.

BlueOvalBoy,
It does seem more prominent in cooler weather, at the same time it sounds like the front end is coming apart because the clunking goes right to where your feet are. On the highway, nothing at all, only at slow speeds is it more noticeable. I'm going to go through it today and check er out...dg

Ok, this is the exact same "thud" I feel in my truck... being described to a "T" by you guys. I have looked for several months for the perpetrator and I can't seem to locate!! There is certainly more clunking in our SD's than I thought... it sounds like all of our trucks will at least fall apart together... heh, j/k. Sooooo....

In sumation:

- Happens at colder ambient temperatures (seems to be about <65 degrees)
- Occurs after anomaly in the road (pothole, bump, sudden drop or rise in road level)
- Felt right under floorboard in D/S area, right in the left foot... very easily felt and heard
- Does not occur in warmer temps or at higher speeds

Here's the things I know that do not cause this: (based on my truck)

1.) Front wheel bearings
2.) Hub assembly
3.) U-joints
4.) Ball Joints (replaced upper/lower both sides... no remedy)
5.) Warped rotors (new rotors, straight as an arrow)

So that leaves us with....

1.) Sway bar bushings...
2.) Spring bracket...
3.) Maybe we're all inebriated due to alcoholism and the thud is imaginary

I would definately like to find out what is causing this... sounds like something we all have so I'm gettin under the truck tonight AGAIN... good luck guys!
