I have an 04 PSD crew cab 4x4. Only when I am turning left, going at least 15 mph, I can hear what soundslike a popping noise. I looked through previous threads for about two hours last night and found four possible answers:
1. tighten sway bar bolts
2. Possible worn out lower ball joints
3. Possible worn out hub bearing
4. One front hub might be locked in or locking by itself
I checked just about evey bolt under the front end of the truck and siliconed all the bushings and the noise is still present. I have not checked the ball joints or hubs yet. I was wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction on what to do next. I don't want to just go out an buy a $400 hub or $200 manual hubs. Any help would be appreciated.
6.0 Superduty, I have the same thing going on im my 06 6.0 Superduty 13k with no real mods... only the popping occurs more frequently...don't have to be turning it can be just when I go over a small bump in the road or when turning. I just started a thread on this last week and it was put/moved on the SuperDuty forum. Had no real concrete answers to what it might be... I don't really want to start "the process" with the dealer just yet and was hoping for some suggestions on what it might be from the FTE folks.
When its popping do you feel the noise in the steering wheel? I had the same issue on my 99 f-250 SD and it turned up being a locked right auto hub. Popped it loose and the issue stopped,
I can for sure feel the noise in my hands when is pops...which is what bothers me the most. My hubs are set to Auto and I have never really done anything with them. How did you get your hub to pop loose?
Tonight I greased up all of the steering joints and jacked up the front of my truck and made sure that the auto hubs were working correctly and they were. The upper and lower ball joints all feel tight. I gave them the wiggle test while the truck was in the air. The noise is still there, but I did notice that I can hear the popping when I hit a bump or a hole. Could a u-joint cause these symptoms, or am I looking at a $400 wheel bearing?
P.S. The truck only has 28,000 miles. Also, what does it sound like when a wheel bearing goes bad? I don't hear anything other than the tires (stock) humming down the road. Also, is it just a coincidence that everybody hears the noise when turning left?
I finally figured it out. The downpipe for the exhaust was rubbing on the frame. When I would go around a left turn, The weight of the PSD would transfer to the right side and the engine vibrating would create a popping noise between the downpipe and the frame. It sounded like it had to be something under the front end, but I talked to my dad, he's a tech, and he said he has fixed other trucks with the same problem. So I checked the downpipe and found the poroblem. Hope this helps you other guys with the same problem.
