GM vs Ford

Looking for opinions from anyone with recent experience with both GM and Ford heavy duty trucks. I currently have a 2023 F-350 7.3/4.30 with about 9k miles. I like the truck, but I have been running into problems every few months with it lately. I am starting to lose confidence in the truck and in Ford, and I am considering jumping ship. It appears the 2024 GM trucks are starting to report less issues, while 2023-2024 Ford trucks are starting to report more issues. When I look at the fit and finish of GM trucks they appear superior to Ford. When you get jerked around on a new truck that shouldn’t be having problems, it has a way of creating a strong bias against that manufacturer. Is the grass really greener on the other side, or is my judgment clouded? I am considering both gas and diesel with GM.

My last Chevy HD truck (2016) was flawless. 2022 Ford, not so much. Ford is chitting the bed.

RAM has been having a lot of issues since 2022 with emissions on the Cummins and no apparent fix. I think it's been hitting GM too.

I'm hopeful it will get sorted but with all the cost cutting going on and more concern for shareholders than customers, we'll see.

I don't frequent GM truck forums so it is possible they are having just as much trouble as Ford are, that we just don't hear about it.

But, their L8T motor does seem to have less known issues and their 10 speed transmission is reputed to be more consistent and less glitchy. Plus they only run one gas engine for their HD line, that to me says they are less distracted with too many engines to maintain and have more confidence in it.

Ford's introduction of the 6.8 never sat well with me, if the difference between the 6.8 and 7.3 gas motors are so small, then why did they bother. My 22 with the 7.3 gas is a very well built truck and so far, knock on wood, has been very good, I'm sure the 23 redesign costed them a pretty penny yet aside from the bed and bumper steps, the vast majority of users won't see a appreciable improvement in ownership experience between the 22 and 23 MYs, but they certainly felt it in the sticker price.

My old 2018 GMC 2500 with L5P was great. Felt a bit underpowered for its HP and TQ rating though (445/910). Only had 2 issues in the 4 years and 42k miles that I owned it; the infotainment screen crapped out, the coolant expansion tank level sensor.

Zero issues with the F250 in a year and 10k miles of ownership.

I went from a 2015 Chevy 2500HD 6.0L, to a 2022 F350 Platinum 7.3L , Been a GM head all my life... (Corvettes - Buick GNX ..and other GM Cars and Trucks) When my 2500 starting showing frame rust after 1yr. and progressively getting worse as time went on, along with a a/c compressor failure and the backup camera failing..along with ball joints and shocks after 2yrs. I knew it was time to make the switch...to a Ford..I can not be more happier with my purchase from Ford...I will never go back to Chevy again..

You’re taking a gamble with any of them. I’d say go with the truck that has the best features you are looking for. But if that doesn’t do it, then figure out which dealership around you that you have the best relationship with and go for it.

This is how I view it. Which one do you like driving the most? Which one has the features you like/want? And what dealership do you have a good working relationship with?

I like the looks of the newer Fords, I like the flat floor in the rear seat, I wasn't sold on the front box steps of the '23s but I've come to find them useful on my FIL's truck. However, I won't buy one for my daily driver - I CANNOT get the driver's seat comfortable. It screws up my back. It wasn't an issue on my last two Fords (an '03 and an '04) but those were several body changes ago. My last two Rams, however, a little playing with and the seats are pretty much perfect, I can drive for 8 hours only stopping for fuel while pulling a trailer and I don't have an issue.

They are real close in features, in my opinion. I think the Ford is slightly better in almost every way, except for fit and finish. But reliability is what is most important to me, and that is the big question mark for me with GM. I can only rely on what others say. I have a better relationship with my Ford dealer (I am there all the time it seems ).

The wax coated frames on the GM’s worry me.

That new ZF 8 speed is intriguing, but have they fixed the lifter issues in the Cummins?

I had a GM truck that stranded me 3 times in 3 years. Sold it.

Several years later I leased a brand new GM truck that went to the shop 10 times in the first 12 months. Got sick of it and turned it in early.

My father has a GMC 3500HD right now with the L5P Duramax and it's been problematic. At 110k miles now and the valvetrain has been replaced, wiring harness has been replaced, DEF pump has been replaced, etc. etc. All very expensive repairs. We can't take that truck on a trip anywhere that the CEL doesn't come on for something. He wants to ditch it so bad he can't stand it but it's paid off in full and he hates to get into a payment again.

I personally have never seen the appeal of GM. Their engineering is bottom of the barrel and the build quality isn't much better.

I have read them, and that is how I know about the lifter issue. As far as I can tell, it’s still a problem. Plus, RAM appears to be on a bigger struggle bus than Ford right now, which is why I wrote them off as a possible replacement.
