2012 6.7 Turbo Surge after upgrade

Hey all,

New to the forum looking for insight and input because I didn’t find any posts with exactly what I am experiencing;

I have a 2012 6.7 I upgraded the turbo to the 2019 style with a retrofit kit from SPE and now I have turbo surge. Anywhere from 5-12 psi change when holding steady speeds especially when climbing hills and towing.

Running H&S Mini Maxx standard tunes, full weight reduction, full intake piping upgrade, and also BD’s exhaust manifolds. SPE was less than helpful when questioned on where to look or how to remedy the surge. Would an up to date tuner and tunes resolve this as H&S is no longer supported/updated? Should I be looking elsewhere? Does not seem like a boost leak or anything like that. Everything is tight and running great other than the surging. It also occurs on all tunes on the Mini Max. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

So you are experiencing turbo surge while under load, still throttling? Is it fluttering while loaded?

Yes still throttling; mainly noticeable while at highway speeds unloaded and also towing on the highway. If I set cruise control even on a flat stretch both towing and truck only the turbo psi will vary; say from 8 up to 14 psi and back to 8 over the course of about 3-4 seconds, holding roughly 60mph. So I’d describe it as surging, a flutter I would think would be a more rapid or frequent jump but similar regardless.

No black smoke accompanied with this boost fluctuation? Power go up and down with the boost reading?

no black smoke; if the power changes it’s not substantial or noticeable, you can’t feel it. I could try watching the tuners estimated HP and Torque gauges I hadn’t thought of that. You just mainly hear the turbo spool up and then ease back down and spool up and ease back down and so on. main thing that concerns me is cruising in 6th gear and it starts doing that fluctuation the egts touch 1000-1100; normally it stays around 800-900 towing. I just got back with the camper today XD

Check my screen shots in the 6.7 section and compare to your data.

different rpms with various air flow data.

the better data is towards the end of the thread

i briefly looked through that post; did you look at the pressure while driving or just parked at those rpm’s? they had to transfer in a sensor so I’ll do more testing before I just swap it. Thanks for the responsiveness I appreciate it!!
