Electric Fan Conversion

Going to be installing a Champion Radiator and shroud and I’m looking at the relay kit which has a temperature sensor that plugs into the intake manifold. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it bolt on directly to that open port where the upper radiator hose connects?

What is the desire for e-fans?

Power and economy gains are minimal and these do not rev high enough in stock form to make a difference. If yours revs high, okay maybe. Been there, done that. Slapped on a 302HO fan in lieu of the steel guy on my 302. More airflow, less rotational mass.

Nice controllers are available now, I would want it with dual speed fan or fans as well as a pressure switch for the AC as there is no reason for it to run the fans above about 35mph unless overheating.

I’m in Florida and when I’m in bumper to bumper traffic my clutch fan can’t keep up. Also, just another fun project to mess around with.

I'll try & link my Taurus e fan project or give you the particulars when I can.

Been in service for about 10 years, Mississippi summers.

Not for everybody, lots of stuff must be done right, but I love it & it's effective as hell.

I have noticed power gains with no fan, running efans, over a locked plastic fan. Higher the RPM, the more you know. Far more over steel fan.

Unlocked versus efans (or no fan) is only about 6-8rw from last dyno I saw. Not much to see, nor feel.

Agreed, needs good controlling device to be seamless. For 302/351 I am lazy and just do the HO fan blade. 300, all I found thus far is the seven bladed steel as the upgrade. It really does not rev high enough to spend time farting around with much else.

What was most revealing is since I have the pimp, the tuner dash shows me the ECT sensor & manifold air temp.

I could use it to switch the fans but not any time soon.

I can watch how much difference and just how fast it changes with the speeds of my fan.

The mech gauge water probe in the t-stat housing is MUCH slower & the factory gauge as well.

so you never got anywhere with the vortec fan? I tried my 6.0 vortec fan and found the center bolt pattern on the fan would have to be changed to fit the 4.9 hub (a 1994-1996 wp hub that is) what were your pre 94 results? also, fan clutch appeared to possibly be a fit but there is no way in hell to fit with a fan to the 4.9 as you run out of room. makes sense since i6

I am finally home with pieces to put the timing set together and then pop in the rad to test the 4.8/5.3/6.0 GM fan fitment. It seems to fit thus far on the water pump with the same blade pitch.

Currently it appears to be like the 302/351 HO fan upgrade. Less mass and more volume. Cross your fingers it works!

Sorry to derail OP.

I’m not sure why this didn’t post the other day but the mechanical fan and fan clutch should have zero problem keeping the engine cool in Florida.

If you end up having fitment issues, I've had really good success with this pulled from a late 90's V6 Ford Contour. Two speed fan pulls enough air to cool a 512ci big block all the way down to 160 degrees on a hot summer day. Used a Dakota Digital fan controller at first and then let the Sniper control the fans when I swapped to fuel injection. This is all Chrysler stuff, so I'm not sure how it would fit on an F150 radiator.

Just curious about the GM fan, is it for the inline 6? If so, what application is it for? Thanks.

Would the fan be the Dorman 620-602 '96-'04 4.3 Blazer or possibly the Motorcraft YA249?

The one I had around is from a GMT800 truck or SUV. It would probably fit with the single core rad or maybe a larger engine bay.

Bummer, I have the 2 row with 7 blade fan for my inline. Cooling is just fine on the truck, just looking to get a little extra flow at idle for the a/c.

Try another.

Or consider a condenser auxiliary fan ran off pressure switch. Runs only when needed.
