Spark plug Torque specs
Hello, I have the 2002 F-250 5.4L 2V V-8 and need to know the torque specs for the spark plugs. I have seen a huge range upto 27 FT LBS. Low range was 14 FT LBS> So, which is it without stripping the aluminum heads? Have 240,000 miles on original heads..

In my experience stripping is not the root issue. The plugs working their way loose due to vibration and thermal cycling is. Once they unscrew they launch. I torque to 18 and as part of the annual PM I re-torque to the same.

My ‘05 2valve V-10 has its plugs torqued to 28 ft/lbs.
There is a video of a guy in a junkyard testing the older short thread modular heads and at around 100 ft/lbs the plugs started to snap off but the the crappy threads in the heads held up fine. Personally I would take the short thread older heads up to 26/28 ft/lbs without any fear, many owners here have and have experienced far less blowout issues.

Thanks Jetty. I had a plug blow on me 2 years ago. Unbeknownst to me, a shop put in one of those "auto parts stores" fixes. Anyway, bought a Cal-Van kit and that install went smooth. I always (when it comes to plugs) split the difference between a high and a low published Torque number.
