Hey, I have 1970 F100 4x2 with a 390, T85N 3 speed O/D transmission. I previously rebuilt the steering column with all new parts and with a shift tube that I "thought" was correct at the time however I don't think it is the right shift tube. I doesn't have a part number and I think it is too long at 28.5 inches long, and doesn't allow enough travel up and down the column between selectors. Long story short, I bought a Service part shift tube that I found and it does have a part number, D3TZ-7212-C. From what I can find, this is the part I need and it should measure 28.3 inches long but this particular one measures 27-7/8ths inches long. So now I'm confused and thought I would see if anyone else knows anything about this. Thanks
P.S. No, I didn't keep the original tube around long enough to compare it to anything because I'm a dumba%@#
Are you sure that you have all the parts lined up correctly? About 7 years ago, I had the column apart in my '66. It was a bea rgetting everything lined up right. When the parts weren't, It didn't move enough.
Well I see 2 ways to do this.
1- trim the .2 off the 28.5 to = 28.3 that you think you need
or
2- install the 27 7/8 tube and see what that dose for you.

Yeah, I thought of that today. Think I'm going to have the short shaft lengthened because it fit's in the shift collar better. Going to cut it in half and weld it up 3/8th's" longer with a tube or or stock that fit's inside the i.d. to weld to. I guess my whole point of the thread is that I don't understand why I have a legitimately stickered shift tube (D3TZ-7212-C) that is shorter than what everything I read says it's supposed to be. It's legit old school SP sticker, not to mention was a used part already. Good shape. I will have to mark it before cutting for alignments sake
A lot of cars & truck used 3 on the tree back in the day.
Someone pulled it and put it on the shelf and years later someone (you) needs it and they think it came from a truck of your year and sold it.
I think you got a good plan on a fix.
I got 3 different models of AMC parts between 3 different years and my 81 f100 pickup and parts truck in my garage it is easy to get parts mixed up.
Oh did I say I also moved with all them AMC parts and 3 cars?
Good luck

According to my Ford microfische machine and slides, D3TZ 7212C was replaced by E3TZ7212F. Which is listed as 28.5" long. Early 1973 trucks needed shift flange collar (AKA shift lever socket) part number D3TZ7228B for the replacement shift tube to work. This was replaced by D5TZ7228C then D5TZ7228B.

E3TZ7212G was 1973/77 F100/350 for P/S. Listed as 26" long.

That's funny because what I see lists D3TZ-7212-c as being 28.3" long which is what I need for my truck and the one I have is shorter than that. I also have the correct shift collar. D3TZ7228B
