Ex conversion?

Found a marketplace sale of an 02 EX, gasser 4x4 with a bad engine. 180k on the clock. The question is, i think i saw a 7.3 with an auto together for sale last week.... how big a deal is it to swap those in, and make the gasser, a diesel?

Only guessing, but I'd imagine most of the swap would be fairly straight forward. I do believe some driveline components were smaller on the v8 gassers mainly driveshafts and u joints. Where you may run into a snag might be the PCM coming from a SD going into an EX. Some of the support modules I think are different and the SD PCM may not speak their language.

You'll probably need the PCM out of the truck with the diesel. Only thing I can think of right now that might create an issue, would be the PATS system which I believe is in the GEM module...not sure how those 2 communicate or if it can be disabled.

You might want to communicate with Diesel Technologies of Chattanooga. He da man on these kind of issues. Text only, but they will reply.

Donor truck.....only way I agree to this kind of thing.

Everything from the dashboard forward (minus the heater
box) to the header panel and the fuel system is needed.

I hadn't considered all the associated wiring that would need a change of address too. Sounding more and more like a "you gotta want it bad" kinda adventure.

Yeah, i dont want it that bad, if i had a wrecked doner, it would be a good grab. The EX is only 1800. And looks pretty clean, but thats a lot left to run down, since i couldnt care less to own a gasser.

The Ex and the Superduty used the same PCMs. They are interchangeable.

If the new PCM doesn't have PATS this won't be an issue. PATS will no longer be functional, but it won't prevent the engine from running. If it does have PATS it should work fine.

I’ve done a bunch of these swaps. 5.4, 6.0 and 6.8 to 7.3.

The only way to do it ‘right’ is a 100% wiring swap. I do not cut or splice or improvise ANYTHING. When I’m done, you can use the factory service manual for the donor vehicle to diagnose any issue with your 2007 7.3 PSD truck or Excursion.

This is the latest one. It was a (cheap!) E99 with a clapped out 5.4 that now has a 2000 7.3 heart.
