93 E-250 low power, 4.9L

I just picked up a '93 E-250 with the 4.9 and a C6. Trans shifts firm, motor idles well, and it moves around my yard well, but it is a dog up even small hills.

I've replaced the fuel filter, timed it, and checked fuel pressure (50 psi @ idle, 57-60 under load uphill). I repaired the EGR tube- it's a lot better than when I got it. It's welded back together and I've minimized the leaks as I've found any. (That also caused weld slag to clog the EGR valve, which has since been rectified). I also removed the O2 sensor as a quick test, and there was no improvement, making it unlikely to be excessive exhaust back pressure. PO claimed to have out fresh plugs and wires, and they do look new, and old plugs and wires were in the van when I bought it. Compression test showed 150psi+ on all cylinders.

What am I missing? I know this thing isn't a racehorse, but I've driven 4.0 Jeeps that pulled harder than this thing. Even my old 4.2 AMC running on 5 1/2 cylinders making way less than the 110 ponies it left the factory with is stronger than this.

Brakes dragging?
What about the cooling fan? Does the engine sound like a jet? A stuck fan clutch will sap most of the engine power. The fan should turn by hand with a little resistance(engine off), if you can't turn it at all the clutch is done.

Clean air filter? Is the throttle plate moving with the pedal?

After replacing the water pump, I actually put electric fans on it, lol. Never again will I disassemble the whole front end for a pump.

I will check the brakes tomorrow- I haven't heard any brake noise, but that's no guarantee. May as well jack up the corners and check them.

Good points. I have not yet replaced the air filter, nor have I checked if there's slop on the plate. It does rev up fine in neutral, so I wouldn't expect that to be an issue, but it's an easy enough check- my 5 year old is always happy to push pedals or buttons for me!

No brake drag- each one spun by hand. New air filter installed, and throttle blades are tight and responsive to pedal input.

Maybe there's a minor improvement? I am still losing speed uphill, and these are just minor little southern Indiana hills, nothing long and steep.

I did find this disconnected hose while I was checking the throttle blades. Anyone have any idea what it's supposed to connect to? I see nothing obvious nearby.

Mystery hose. It seems like it had been plugged with a bolt and hose, so I replaced their plug. There isn't an obvious connection point nearby.

That hose looks like it is part of the thermactor(air injection) system, I'm not familiar with the exact routing for this system on the I6 but it may have been connected to a line that fed air to the cats. Is that tube still present? If so is it capped?

So I have narrowed the issue down to cylinders 3 and 4. Did a contribution test, and found that neither made any change. I replaced the injectors, because moving the originals around seemed to fix the issue, and I found that they were very clogged. I also have already replaced the fuel filter. I also cycled the key with each injector out one at a time, in order to flush any contamination out of the lines and rail.

However, even with the new injectors, I still have no contribution from cylinders 3 or 4. Am I looking at a wiped cam? Any suggestions on how to check without having to pull the valve cover? Looks like it'd be a bear in the van.

View valve opening with a borescope? Compare 3 and 4 with a good cylinder.
