I have a 96 5.0 with auto trans. 193,000 miles. It is running but not good and I cant figure out what is going on. I have taken it to 4 local shops and the say it runs great? ..,but I have no power. When the truck gets going it will roar and i can punch it and feels like I could run faster..even my wife notices so I am sure I was not crazy..the truck ran fine no misses no engine lights..so after replacing the fan clutch the belt tensoner, plugs it still would do it occasionally. I then went to another shop who said it was the fan clutch which i had changed so I got another one, it still did the same thing, then being mad i decided it was the tranny it slipped anyway so i put in a rebuild one thinking surly this thing was going to fly now, but no luck.. I drove for the last six months like this and it was better but just feels like a 4banger. I was still worried with the fan clutch so i Have just taken it off. it runs better but now I think it is coming to a head. The truck sounds great at idle but driving it feels like i dont get enough gas. It also has just randomly started to die while driving like someone just pulled the plug, no backfire or spudder just ...off...on..then fine.. SOOO here are my next thoughts..1. fuel pressure? injectors-one of the pumps-or the dual tank switch i hear everyone complain about..2. vaccum leak?. I am going to do a compression test today and fuel pressure test.....btw already had new cat. new fuel filter. new timing chain .water pump . t-stat. cap rotor.
Reinstall the fan-clutch or your overheat that por engine to death. The shop probably adviced replacing it, not removing it. Retrieve the ECM codes to see if there is anything out of order with the sensors or computer itself. Have you replaced or checked anything at all? my bet is on either a plugged cat or fuel filter. Test the fuel pressure, it should be around 39-40psi at iddle.
